Comma Practice Fold a sheet of unlined paper in half hamburger style.
Unfold your paper. Using both sides of the paper, you now have four quadrants. Copy the rules on the following slide onto your paper. You will place one group of rules in each quadrants as demonstrated on the slide.

Use after an introductory word, phrase, or clause.
(In the beginning, I thought this would be easy.) (No, I don’t think I can go.) Use after a transitional word. (Otherwise,) In places (between city, state) In dates (between day, year) Between a name and the person’s title (Smith, Jr.) In numbers (1,000) In direct quotations, “Et tu, Brute?” Use with parenthetical expressions: …set off names: I know, Robert, that you will win the race. ….certain adverbs: I decided, therefore, to wait. …Common expressions/not necessary to sentence: Mr. Cass agreed, I believe, to go in my place. …Contrasting expressions: The room is narrow, not wide. Use with coordinating conjunctions (FANBOYS) to connect two independent clauses. (I would like to stay, but I must go.) Use in listing items in a series. (I like to jet ski, surf, snorkel and sail.) Use with multiple adjectives/adverbs. (It was a one-eyed, one-horned, flying, purple people eater.)
