1 DNA The code of life

2

3 Predict if the DNA of all of these organisms has the same structure and explain

4 Answer Yes, the basic structure of DNA is the same for all organisms. However, the sequence of nucleotides differs. It is only a minor difference within a species (spp.) but becomes greater the more distantly related spp are.

5 What is this?

6 Questions? Deoxyribonucleic Acid Nucleus of your cells
1. What does DNA stand for? Deoxyribonucleic Acid 2. Where is your DNA stored? Nucleus of your cells 3. How are chromosomes and DNA related? DNA coils into chromosomes before cell division

7 (a library of about 1,000 books)
AMAZING DNA FACTS… DNA from a single human cell extends in a single thread for almost 2 meters long!!! It contains information equal to some 600,000 printed pages of 500 words each!!! (a library of about 1,000 books)

8 A HISTORY OF DNA Discovery of the DNA double helix
B. Rosalind Franklin X-ray photo of DNA.(1952) C. Watson and Crick – described the DNA molecule from Franklin’s X-ray.(1953)

9 DNA is a Double Helix “Rungs of ladder” Nitrogenous Base (A,T,G or C)
“Legs of ladder” Phosphate & Sugar Backbone

10 Structure of DNA Double-helix- two strands twist around each other
It is made up of nucleotides Nucleotides have 3 parts: Phosphate group Nitrogen base (A,G,T, or C) Sugar (called deoxyribose)

11 DNA Adenine (A) and Thymine (T) always bond together, and Cytosine (C) and Guanine ( G) always bonds together.

12 DNA, chromosomes, and genes are located in the nucleus
Where is DNA? DNA, chromosomes, and genes are located in the nucleus of the cell

13 What does DNA do? The DNA of each cell carries the complete set of genes that provide instructions for making all the proteins a cell requires -its like a code for an organisms genetic material

14 Exit Ticket What does DNA stand for? What is the function of DNA?
Name the base pairs for DNA Where are genes located? What is a nucleotide?
