1 Comparing types of Precipitation

2 Read and study each page of this PowerPoint with your table group.
Each group member should take notes about each type of precipitation. You are looking for information that describes: How the different types of precipitation form Where the different types of precipitation form What the different types of precipitation look like Any damage that the different types of precipitation can cause

9 Snow and Sleet Snow is frozen precipitation. Snow crystals form when the temperature is below freezing and water vapor is converted straight into a solid. The term for a substance going from a gas straight to a solid is sublimation. Every level of the troposphere must be below freezing so that the snow does not melt on its way down.

11 Hail Hail is frozen pellets of rain that were formed by raindrops being carried up and down in the air currents of a cumulonimbus cloud. Once a hail stone is heavy enough, it escapes from the air currents and falls to the ground.

18 Once you have collected notes on the five forms of precipitation from all three sources: this PowerPoint, the Weather article, and the Precipitation reading passage, work together with your group to make sure all team members have all of the notes. When you are certain that each team member has all notes, get six small pieces of paper from the back table. Position A will write the notes about snow, position B will write the notes about sleet, position C will write the notes about freezing rain, and position D will write the note about rain. Come up with a way to get the notes about hail and the notes about all 5 forms of precipitation written down, as well. Once each set of notes has been written, get a large piece of paper from the back table and arrange the pieces of paper to create a poster similar to the one on the next slide. If you have time, add illustrations to your poster.
