1 Section 5.2 Using Intercepts

2 Objective By following instructions students will be able to:
Identify and use intercepts in linear relationships.

3 The y-intercept of a graph is the y-coordinate of the point where the graph intersects the y-axis.
The x-intercept of a graph is the x-coordinate of the point where the graph intersects the x-axis.

4 Explain 1 Find the x- and y-intercepts. a) b) 3x - 2y = 6

5 Reflect #1 If the point (5, 0) is on a graph, is (5, 0) the y-intercept of the graph? Explain. Your-Turn #1 Find the x- and y-intercepts. a) b) 8x + 7y = 28 -6x - 8y = 24

6 Explain 2A Find and interpret the x- and y-intercepts for each situation. The Sandia Peak Tramway in Albuquerque, New Mexico, travels a distance of about 4500 meters to the top of Sandia Peak. Its speed is 300 meters per minute. The function ƒ (x) = x gives the tram’s distance in meters from the top of the peak after x minutes.

7 Explain 2B A hot air balloon is 750 meters above the ground and begins to descend at a constant rate of 25 meters per minute. The function ƒ(x) = x represents the height of the hot air balloon after x minutes.

8 Your-Turn #2 The temperature in an experiment is increased at a constant rate over a period of time until the temperature reaches 0 °C. The equation y = 5x/ gives the temperature y in degrees Celsius x hours after the experiment begins. Find and interpret the x- and y-intercepts.

9 Explain 3A Use intercepts to graph the line described by each equation.

10 Explain 3B Use intercepts to graph the line described by each equation. 18y = 12x + 108

11 Revisit Objective Did we…
Identify and use intercepts in linear relationships?
