2 Big question Why do People come to America and how does that movement change American society? Objective Students will be able to identify Push/Pull factors and explain how immigrants influence American society.

3 Push and Pull Factors In your spiral, create a T-chart with the left side titled Push factors and the Right side titled Pull factors. What are they? Push: Are reasons for leaving a country “Emigration” Pull: Are reasons for going to a country “Immigration” Write down the definition from above on its respective side.

4 The Reasons 1. What are some Push Factors? Political: Unstable or Oppressive political system Economic: No jobs Social: Religious or minority persecution 2.What are some Pull factors? Political: Stable, Democratic government Economic: Many jobs Social: Open/Free Society

6 Note-taking The following slides will detail the journey's of several groups into and across the US. In your spiral, we will be taking Cornell-style notes. The right hand column is for notes and the left-hand column is for questions. All important notes will be in this color font.

7 Irish and Germans The potato famine of the mid-1800s and oppressive British rule pushed many poor Irish to immigrate to the US. Religious persecution, political revolution, and food shortages pushed many Germans towards the US. Many Germans settled in Central Texas. These new Immigrants usually worked in factories or moved out west to work the land.

8 Mormons and the move to Utah
Joseph Smith founded the Church of Latter-Day Saints in People associated with the church are known as Mormons. Due to religious prosecution by non-Mormon groups in the 1840s, Smith decided to move his church out west. Brigham Young, a Mormon leader, arrived in Utah and established a Salt Lake City in 1847.

9 California Gold Rush In the 1840s, gold was discovered in California and caused many people to immigrate. People came from Australia, Europe, Latin America, and China. People who came in search of gold were known as “forty-niners”. The sudden influx of immigrants caused California to become a state in 1850.

10 Chinese and Railroads The movement of people out west created a need for the railroad to expand along with them. In order to build this track, laborers had to be brought in from China due to lack of workers in the west. The Chinese came mainly for the jobs and the opportunity to depart their country that was in economic and political despair.

11 Negative Reactions to Immigrants
The “Know-Nothing Party” forms: name derives from the phrase, “I know nothing” Campaigned on a platform of Anti-Immigrant and Anti-Catholic propaganda Millard Fillmore as the 1856 presidential candidate, who won 21% of the popular vote Nativist Movement: Groups of Americans who believed that America belong only to native-born citizens.

12 Immigrant Stories In your spiral, write a short story depicting the journey of your immigrant ancestors to the US. Be sure to note why they came and whether it was political, economic, or social factor. Do the best you can with the information you know. If time permits, we will share some of the stories.
