A New Conversational Query Language (C-QL) For The “Emotionally Intelligent” Smartphone Amy Neustein, Ph.D.
2
Goals of the “In-Touch” Mobile Assistant
Extract hidden sentiment from the “Big Data” of online product reviews and reader reactions to political news stories Use of emotion-detection proactively for the ‘Internet of Things’ Detect signs of frustration in search queries and prevent abandonment of search
3
METHOD C-QL (conversational query language) is based on Sequence Package Analysis (SPA) – a new natural language understanding method that provides the algorithms for machines to understand the richness of human language with its attendant ambiguities, convolutions, and ellipses – making machines emotionally intelligent. The algorithms are based on detecting sequence packages: a series of related context-free (not domain specific) grammatical units and associated prosodic/punctuation features, discretely packaged as a sequence of online conversational interaction, for which there is a corresponding list of interchangeable terminals: words, phrases, or a whole utterance.

VITAL STATS FOR C – QL GESTATION…to…BIRTH…to…MATURITY
From 1984 – 2001 Step 1: Gestation In 2001: SPA first appeared in peer-reviewed literature; cited by peers as a promising method Step 2: Birth In 2015: SPA productized as a “smart” social media engine Step 3: Maturity
5
Why Long Gestation, Difficult Birth, and Delayed Maturation?
Academic Institutions Demand IP Control—preventing entry to marketplace Technology Must be Niche-Marketed Demand for Products Often Need to Precede Development Too Broad Patent Applications Squelch Young Companies Cronyism and Patronage
