5th Grade Project Ideas

Project Selection Teacher will decide on project(s).
Will you have more than one project going on in your classroom? Will students be required to complete more than 1 project? Will students be working in groups or individually? Teacher chosen?

Format Decide on the format for final product
Word, PowerPoint, Poster, SMART Board, booklet, brochure, etc. Do you have the appropriate resources? Computers, tablets, laptops, camera, poster board, markers, ads, catalogs, recipes, etc. Will you need to reserve technology? Coordinate with other classes.

Project Requirements Create a rubric for each project.
What will your expectations be? Be sure to share rubric with students before projects begin. Consider group evaluations. Set a due date timeline to assess student progress. Accountability – what and when will parts of project be due?

Lodging Food Souvenirs Final destination plans Extension: Calculate the cost of the trip. Your original budget has now been cut in half. Where will you cut costs to still do the same trip?

Million Dollar Project-The student must spend 1,000,000,000 including the following criteria:
Deposit 50,000 in savings account Put away 75,000 for college Buy 1 home not over 500,000 Buy only 3 of the same item Buy a stock Buy a bond Take 1 vacation Buy 1 car (do not exceed 200,000) Charity donation cannot exceed 100,000

Math Board Game Theme Board
Movers and a numeric way to move (dice, spinner, cards…) Problem Solving Cards with an answer key Extension: Require the students to have certain math topics in their skills.

Design Your Dream House
Requirements: 4 windows, 2 doors 6 rooms Determine a scale and draw dimensions on graph paper Find the perimeter and area of each using centimeters and millimeters Extension: buy furniture, paint, accessories..

Geometric Town Theme Requirements: parallel streets
perpendicular streets intersecting streets that form an obtuse angle use 10 shapes-buildings 1 park with rectangular prism sandbox 1 pool-specify shape Additional idea: take pictures around the school representing the different geometric concepts and make a power point presentation.

Design a Menu Theme Criteria: 5 appetizers 6 beverages 12 main dishes
4 desserts Extension: Make a list of friends and family to take to your restaurant for dinner, order for them, and calculate the cost.

Shopping Spree Buy: 2 pair pants 5 shirts 1 pair tennis shoes
1 pair dress shoes 6 pair socks 1 jacket Comparison shop to find the best price. What is the most expensive outfit? Least expensive? What are all the possible outfits that you can make?

Dinner Party Use a recipe book to plan a dinner party.
Select a recipe for an appetizer, a salad, main course, two sides, and a dessert. You are inviting 25 people, so you will need double or triple the recipe to accommodate all guests. List the amount of each ingredient you will use in your recipes. **Students will use fractions for this project.
