Agenda What? Why? How? Other Tricks…

What is Access Services?
SharePoint Service Application SQL Database/Access Client SharePoint App Model Views in Access 2013 Web Apps use HTML, CSS and JavaScript. User Interface Macros are converted to JavaScript. Data Macros are stored procedures and triggers in SQL Server.

Why use Access Services with SharePoint 2013?
Quick and easy! Relational Scenarios that are too complicated for SharePoint lists An easy way to share a database and still maintain a single point of maintenance. Users don’t need Access to interact with the data. Offers better data integrity (relationships, rules, uniqueness for fields) than SharePoint lists.

How to create a database for Access Services 2013?
Demo The Access Web App has it’s own SQL Server database. Tables in the Web App are tables inside the SQL database. You can link to SharePoint lists but it’s read only. SP lists can be imported or linked. All other options are import only… SQL tables, Access, Excel, CSV, etc… Use the Access 2013 Client to design the Web App. Only the autonumber ID field can be the primary key. You cannot delete this field but it can be renamed. You cannot create multi-field primary keys. You can however create multi-field indexes and enforce uniqueness across the multi-field index. Multi-field indexes can help narrow the search quickly without having to match values from two separate index tables. They can be created using the Indexes button in the ribbon (must be in edit table mode, design view). Add a new Field Name in a row without typing an Index name. The process to creating relationships involves creating lookups. A lot of great out of box views that are created for you

Some other tricks… Reporting Sharing with peers $$$ Calculated Fields
You can save your Access Services Web App as an app package which allows you to import and use on another SharePoint Server. It’s saved as an .app file Could include data if you choose It would just need to be uploaded to the company’s Corporate Catalog, allowing users to install it on their SharePoint sites App package could be put in the Office App Marketplace or the SharePoint store for sale or to share with external developers A new calculated field allows you to store a calculation in a table… why do this? So it doesn’t have to recalculate each time you run a query, a potential for performance gain when running large queries. The calculation is only done when one of the values is changed.
