1 Section 2-1: Functions and Relations
Learning Target: I can determine if a function is a relation.

2 Opening Question? What is a function?

3 Definitions: One to one: each element of the domain pairs to exactly one unique element of the range. Onto: Each element of the range corresponds to an element of the domain. Both one to one and onto: both are satisfied

4 Domain/Range Domain values are ___________________ coordinates.
Range values are ____________________ coordinates.

5 Relations: Discrete: a relation in which the domain is a set of individual points Continuous: a relation that has an infinite number of elements and the relation can be graphed with a line or smooth curve

6 Example: Determine the domain and range:
1. [(-6,-1),(-5,-9),(-3,-7), (-1,7), (6,-9)] Does the set of coordinates create a function? Is the set one to one? Is the set onto?

7 Vertical Line Test Question: What is the purpose of the vertical line test?

8 Independent/Dependent Variable:
Independent: most often associated with x value of function Dependent: most often associated with y value of function Independent can also be inferred as input value, and dependent is output value.

9 Examples: 1. Given ๐‘“ ๐‘ฅ = 2๐‘ฅ 2 โˆ’8, find each value. A. ๐‘“(6) B. ๐‘“(2๐‘ฆ)
