Overview of Symposium Welcome
The process and challenges of team writing-becoming a community of practice Relating chapters to current research Applying theories to research and practice

Origins of Book Lack of one key text that covers a range of early years theories Expand students use and application of theory to their own writing and highlight our own research To identify a more diverse and less explored range of theories and key concepts Collective understanding – developed a framework of what the book would look like and this evolved through collective decision making Establishment of joint aims – chose a theorist, design practicalities: layout, cameos, examples of practice, links to our own research. Understanding of our own and others responsibilities – content, time frames – reciprocal commitment As Handley et al. (2006 p.642) identify: …the suggestion is that individual learning should be thought of as emergent, involving opportunities to participate in the practices of the community as well as the development of an identity which provides a sense of belonging and commitment. Shared repertoire of communal resources – sharing of reading/articles, sign posting, common language, sharing of ideas Situated learning – through the use of interaction begin to construct knowledge of the social and cultural practices of our book writing community. It also involves the transfer of the knowledge and skills of the more experienced community members to support newly joined or less experienced members using informal or ‘situated’ learning; thus constructing individual professional identify as well as a community identity This links to Lave and Wenger’s (1991) idea of ‘old timers’ and ‘new comers’ and the use of legitimate peripheral participation

Community of Practice Collective understanding – developed a framework of what the book would look like and this evolved through collective decision making Establishment of joint aims – chose a theorist, design practicalities: layout, cameos, examples of practice, links to our own research. Understanding of our own and others responsibilities – content, time frames – reciprocal commitment

Quote “…learning is an integral part of our everyday lives. It is part of our participation in our communities and organizations. The problem is not that we do not know this, but rather we do not have systematic ways of talking about this familiar experience.”
