1 2*4 Projectile Motion: Launching Things into the Air
WDYS? (p174) / WDYT? (p174) How far an object thrown into the air travels BEFORE landing is determined by _____ and _____ and _____.

2 2*4 Mini-Lab #1: Throw v. Drop
You will observe two ping-pong balls as they’re thrown from the same height; where one will be dropped and the other will be thrown. Which one will hit the ground first? Prediction: The change in the initial speed (will/will not) effect the drop time Observation: __________________________ Video Did the “throw” effect the time that it took to hit the ground?

3 2*4 Mini-Lab #2: Slow v. Fast
The initial speed of the object will now be changed. One will be thrown FAST, the other will be thrown SLOW. Will the change in initial speed effect the time that it hits the floor? PREDICTION: The change in the initial speed (will/will not) effect the drop time Observation: ____________________________ Was the drop time effected by the change in the initial speed? Was anything else effected?

4 2*4 Mini-Lab #3: Height Now, we’re going to do it again, BUT this time, one of the ping-pong balls will be held up higher. (same speed, same time) What will be the effect of the change in height on the range (how far it goes) and the drop time of the throw? PREDICTION: The change in the height (will/will not) effect the drop time The change in the height (will/will not) effect the range OBSERVATION: _____________________________ Did the height affect drop time? Did the height affect how far the object moved HORIZONTALLY? Explain why or why not.

5 Mini-Lab Conclusion: What is (are) the variable (s) that affect the “drop time” of a ping-pong ball? What is (are) the variable (s) that affect the range of a ping-pong ball? Rules for projectile: In ALL projectiles, ______ effects the drop time for projectiles ______ effects the range for projectiles

6 ***Believing is Seeing***
2*4 NOTES Projectiles and Trajectories The HORIZONTALLY thrown ping pong ball (ppb)and the DROPPED ppb hit the ground at the SAME TIME WHY??? This occurs because there is NO AIR RESISTANCE acting against it ***Believing is Seeing***

7 ***Look at the Diagram!!!***
The HORIZONTAL MOTION does NOT affect its downward motion The VERTICAL MOTION is the SAME for both the thrown and dropped ping pong ball ***Look at the Diagram!!!***

8

9 Any hit or thrown ball travels HORIZONTALLY AND VERTICALLY
HORIZONTAL VELOCITY remains the SAME (if there is NO air resistance) VERTICAL VELOCITY is constantly CHANGING

10 ***Look at the Diagram!!!***
The ball changes velocity the same at every second…it changes at a rate of 10m/s/s is known as GRAVITY!!!

11 2*4 Checking Up TOTD If a pen and a ruler are thrown from the same height at the same time, will they hit the ground at the same time? Explain your answer. (ignore air resistance) When a ball is dropped vertically(not thrown) does its velocity change or remain constant? Explain your answer.
