6. How Can I Become a Better Presenter?
Prepare the right way. Start by answering these questions:
What is the specific purpose of your presentation?
What is your topic?
Who is your audience?
What are your time constraints?
What visual aids will you use?

7. How to Prepare for Your Presentation
Start with structure – Formal Outline followed by a shorter Speakers Outline
Topic selection – What story about your research will you tell?
Start broad, work towards specific ideas
What does your audience already know?
How will I use figures like flow charts, graphs, and maps to tell my story?

8. Time CONSIDERATIONS How much is too much information?
Overinform: Cramming too much material into too short a time
Underinform: Overestimating the amount of material that you have
Rehearse….and then rehearse again. Your speech will be ingrained in you.

9. Organization CONSIDERATIONS
Structure: Tell them what you’re going to tell them, tell them it, then tell them what you told them.
Make sure everything has a beginning, middle, and end.
Ask yourself if you are meeting audience expectations.
What figures and photographs will you use?

First impressions matter – you are judged positively or negatively by your audience immediately.
Make eye contact with many and address multiple parts of the room.
Know your introduction – if it goes well, the rest becomes easier.

If you make a mistake, acknowledge it, and move on.
To fail to prepare is to prepare to fail
