1 Public Speaking and YOUR UPCOMING RESEARCH PRESENTATION
Dr. Allan Nelson Professor Biological Sciences

2 Jerry Seinfeld: “According to most studies, people's number one fear is public speaking. Number two is death. Death is number two. Does that sound right? This means to the average person, if you go to a funeral, you're better off in the casket than doing the eulogy.”

3 Presentation Anxiety Lack of Positive Experience Being the Center of Attention Being Judged by an Audience Fear of Fail

4 Four Types PRESENTATION Anxiety: 1
Four Types PRESENTATION Anxiety: 1. Pre-preparation Anxiety – Can’t get started 2. Preparation Anxiety – During Planning 3. Pre-performance Anxiety – Day before Performance Anxiety – During presentation

5 A Healthy Fear of Failure Helps!
Audiences want to be entertained or informed. Audience wants you to be successful in your goals. What is the worst that can happen? Figured it out? Now prepare to prevent.

6 How Can I Become a Better Presenter?
Prepare the right way. Start by answering these questions: What is the specific purpose of your presentation? What is your topic? Who is your audience? What are your time constraints? What visual aids will you use?

7 How to Prepare for Your Presentation
Start with structure – Formal Outline followed by a shorter Speakers Outline Topic selection – What story about your research will you tell? Start broad, work towards specific ideas What does your audience already know? How will I use figures like flow charts, graphs, and maps to tell my story?

8 Time CONSIDERATIONS How much is too much information?
Overinform: Cramming too much material into too short a time Underinform: Overestimating the amount of material that you have Rehearse….and then rehearse again. Your speech will be ingrained in you. Mark Twain: ““It usually takes me more than three weeks to prepare a good impromptu speech.”

9 Organization CONSIDERATIONS
Structure: Tell them what you’re going to tell them, tell them it, then tell them what you told them. Make sure everything has a beginning, middle, and end. Ask yourself if you are meeting audience expectations. What figures and photographs will you use?

10 Nelson’s Nuggets Dress in clothes that make you feel comfortable and confident. First impressions matter – you are judged positively or negatively by your audience immediately. Make eye contact with many and address multiple parts of the room. Know your introduction – if it goes well, the rest becomes easier. Get photographs as you work to use in presentations If you make a mistake, acknowledge it, and move on. To fail to prepare is to prepare to fail

11 Assignment Prepare a five minute introduction to your research using the notes section of your phone or a laptop. Introduce the other participants to what you have found out about your research. Save this text to use in your upcoming presentation! Verbally present this to us 15 minutes from now! Ready-Set-Go!
