César Chávez is self-taught Mexican-American who is inspired by the Civil Rights Movement, and the non-violent resistance of MLK and Gandhi /

In the early 1960s, César Chávez and Dolores Huerta organized two groups that fought for the rights of farmworkers. In 1966, after employers would not respond to worker demands, the groups organized a boycott of table grapes and combined into one group, the United Farm Workers. The boycott ended in 1970, when grape growers finally agreed to raise wages and improve working conditions.

6 Coors Beer Company was boycotted due to unfair practices in their factories against Hispanic workers (1960’s) In 1966, Chicana/os called for the boycott of Coors beer because of its racist hiring practices. In 1969, Coors was charged with racial discrimination. Coors was found guilty in Not until 1977 was Coors finally forced to settle out of court, paying thousands of dollars and rehiring several workers.

Key Successes: - Growing racial pride and unity -establish social services -Advocated for the establishment of Mexican American studies programs on college campus -Developed political awareness for latino issues Chicano or BROWN Power Movement Mexican American Youth Organization (MAYO): establish community services- child care, legal aid, housing, employment, and healthcare -Brown Berets (Modeled after Black Panthers) included former gang members who committed themselves to the “service, education, and defense.” -MECHA- Chicano studies movement -Raza Unida party- a political party committed to Chicano causes Chicano Youth Movement Ruben Ayala- journalist police brutality
