1 Homework Packet 4 Due Friday
Warm up: What is the main component of the cell membrane? Flush: Would you rather write a paper or take a test? Homework Packet 4 Due Friday

2 Warm Up Part 2 Cell membrane matching
TRY to do it WITHOUT your notes! Then consult your notes as needed…

3 Cell Transport Yesterday we discussed the structure of the cell membrane Today, we will discuss how things move in and out of the cell Many nutrients and essential molecules need to move in or out of our cells at all times Also, viruses and bacteria can enter our cells and cause damage

4 Solutes and Solvents Our bodies are filled with many molecules (solutes) and liquids that dissolve those molecules (solvents) A solute (salt, sugar) can be dissolved by solvents (water) Our cells like to have an even amount of solutes and solvents on each side of the cell, but also need to meet the demands of the cell Example: If our cells need glucose for energy, then more must be transported into the cell

5 Concentration Gradients
Naturally, solutes move from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration No energy required! If it moves against the concentration gradient, energy is required

6 Two types of transport Passive transport Active transport
No energy required Moves from high concentration of solute to a low concentration of solute Active transport Requires energy (ATP) Moves from a low concentration of solute to a high concentration of solute

7 Passive Transport Diffusion Facilitate Diffusion Osmosis

8 Active Transport Na+/K+ Pump Endocytosis Exocytosis

9 Types of Transport Diagram

10 Types of Transport Video

11 Transport Poem/Song/Rap
You will write a line song/poem/rap about cell transport It can be in any format you want, but must be school appropriate Include… The difference between active and passive transport Examples of each (you don’t have to explicitly state ‘an example is…’) The concept of concentration gradients Which way each types of transport flows through a concentration gradient Include the term solute somewhere in your poem/rap/song This is an individual project, the lyrics will be turned in to me for a grade

12 Exit Ticket Explain why passive transport does not require any energy while active transport does. Use the word solute and concentration gradient in your answer
