Matter Packet #3 Chapter #1 Sections 2 & 3
2
Classifying Matter
3
Introduction Matter is all around All matter is composed of atoms
Water Air Plants Friends All matter is composed of atoms In most cases, multiple atoms are joined together to make the matter.
4
Studying Matter To study different types of matter, it must be classified.
5
Pure Substances Pure substances have specific properties that can be used to identify it Occurs in two forms Elements Compounds
6
Elements Pure substance that contains one type/kind of an atom.
May contain many of those atoms The atom WILL have the same Number of protons Number of neutrons
7
Molecules A molecule, which is a type of element, consists of two or more atoms in a defined ratio. Molecules can exist in different forms Two or more atoms Elements Multiple atoms (similar) joined together.
8
Compounds Substance that contains more than one kind of atom
Represented by formulas Carbon Dioxide CO2

Substances & Mixtures
13
Substances & Mixtures Substances Mixtures
Pure substances can fall in two categories Elements One type Cannot be separated by physical or chemical methods Compounds Two or more substances joined together Can only be separated by chemical methods. Physical blend of two or more substances Heterogeneous Mixture Not uniform throughout 2 or more phases Homogeneous Mixture (Solution) Uniform Exists in 1 phase
14
Common Mixtures Solid~Solid Solid~Liquid Liquid~Liquid Sand & granite
Salad dressing Liquid~Liquid Oil & water
15
Common Solutions Gas-Gas CO2 in air Gas-Liquid CO2 in H2O (soda water)
Gas-Solid Ice cream Liquid-Gas H2O vapor in air Solid-Liquid NaCl in H2O (salt water) Solid-Solid Cu in Ag (sterling silver)
16
Mixture & Substances Connection to Formulas
17
Mixtures & Formulas Recall, a mixture is composed of two or more substances. The formula shows the composition of the two or more mixtures.
