Water Air Plants Friends All matter is composed of atoms In most cases, multiple atoms are joined together to make the matter.

4 Studying Matter To study different types of matter, it must be classified.

5 Pure Substances Pure substances have specific properties that can be used to identify it Occurs in two forms Elements Compounds

6 Elements Pure substance that contains one type/kind of an atom.
May contain many of those atoms The atom WILL have the same Number of protons Number of neutrons

7 Molecules A molecule, which is a type of element, consists of two or more atoms in a defined ratio. Molecules can exist in different forms Two or more atoms Elements Multiple atoms (similar) joined together.

8 Compounds Substance that contains more than one kind of atom
