4 How will you know how your child is doing?
Year 1 will be assessed against the National Curriculum objectives. We will be using a tool called ‘Target Tracker’ which will plot your child’s progress throughout the year.

5 Marking Over the course of the last year we have been trialing a variety of approaches with a particular emphasis on immediate feedback and marking during lessons. This is something we will be developing over this academic year and which we will share with pupils and parents in due course.

6 Communication with Parents
Meet the teacher evening Parents Forum (date TBC) hosted by Mrs Jones, Mr Taylor and members of SLT. Mid year report to be sent home February 2019 End of year reports to be sent home July 2019. Open evenings for children to share their work with parents. Dates TBC. Parents Evenings in October (Tuesday 16th and Wednesday 17th October) and February In these meetings we will share your child’s progress both academically, socially and emotionally – however should we need to discuss any of these prior to these meetings we will make contact with you. Appointments If you have any concerns please do not hesitate to contact us via the school office. If you require a separate / additional copy of a school report / mid year report – please let the office know and they can arrange it for you. Pupil Progress Discussions regarding your child’s progress can be held with the class teacher, at any point in the year at your request. Alternatively the class teacher may contact you regarding your child’s progress.

7 Reading Each child needs to read their books every night. Once books are finished, or any reading has been completed, please sign the Reading Diary. Books will be changed on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays when both books have been read. In the first half term we will be teaching all the children how to change their own books. Each child will be heard by the teacher and the TA once a week during guided reading sessions. It is really important that they sound out correctly any words they don’t know. We would encourage you to ask as many comprehension questions as possible to ensure your child is understanding what they are reading. Words in wallets need to be brought in daily and practiced regularly and will be tested as sight words!

8 Phonics In Year 1 we will be teaching Phonics everyday for 20 minutes.
phonicsplay.co.uk is a website we often use in school and can be used at home too. It is a great tool for practising phase 3, 4 and 5 phonics. At the end of Year 1 the children will be tested by one of the Year 1 teachers using National Assessment criteria to see if they have reached the standard required by all Year 1 children. Your child’s result will be reported to you.

10 Around the world X table passports
From 2020 children will be tested nationally on their times table knowledge (x1-12) at the end of Year 4. In preparation for this here at St Francis we have introduced a passport system that will help the children to learn their times tables by the end of Year 4 in a fun way. It will start here in Year 1 with learning their number bonds to 10, 20 and then 100. Children will have 20 questions to answer each week and will have 6 minutes to complete them. They will move on to the next set of questions when they have answered all of them correctly. Each time they do this they get a stamp in their passport. Each Friday they will bring home their questions and you will be able to see which ones they need to practice for the following week. It will take several weeks for some children to learn each set so don’t panic! We will practice with the children each week during our Maths time. We will probably start this after half term.
