Plain Indians By: Brooke Bosse, Justine Cuomo, Jazlyn Santos

2 Plain Indians The Plain Indians (Sioux Native Americans) had seven large tribes. Each tribe had their own village and each had there own village council which was their government. The Plain Indians were hunter-gatherers. They relied on the three sisters. Their main source of food was buffalo. The Plain Indians live in the Great Plains. The Great Plains run from the Mississippi River to the mountains in Canada. Plain Indians use a variety of weapons. The weapons were used for hunting. Some weapons they used are the bow and arrow, tomahawks, and spears. The arrows were created out of sticks and sharp stones. Tomahawks being the most well known weapon were used for hunting, and for trading.

3 Government All adult males are members of the village council.
Long ago, women had no say in the government. The village council selected a chief, and the chief served for life. After a chief died, the members of the council would elect a new chief.

4 Government The chief selected small groups inside the village council. He assigned each group a job. An example of a job would be making sure everyone was following the laws. Another example is planning village festivals.

5 Religion Religion is a part of the Plain Indians’ daily life.
The Plain Indians have religious ceremonies all year. They were polytheistic. They believe everything has a spirit. There were spirits who live underwater and control all animals and plants. In the air there were thunder birds who were powerful spirits. The most powerful spirit was the Great Spirit. The Great Spirit was a Sioux god.

6 Religion The White Buffalo Woman gave the tribes a sacred pipe.
When the sacred pipe was smoked, the smoker could have a vision. To the Sioux, visions were powerful things. There were religious ceremonies all year.

8 Geography The Plain Indians lived in the Great Plains. This is how they got there name. The Great Plains run from the Mississippi River to the mountains in Canada. The Great Plains are a mix of plains and cliffs.

9 Food Plain Indians were hunter-gatherers.
They hunted buffalo, deer, and other animals. They gathered fruits and vegetables. The three sisters were also very important. The three sisters are maize, squash, and beans. Plain Indians grew pumpkins. For money they traded the food that they grew. Since buffalo was one of their main sources of food, many men hunted them. The boys could hunt a buffalo at the age of 10.

10 Clothing Plain Indians used animal skin, and fur for clothes.
Women wore dresses made from soft deer skin. They also used soft fur for detailing. The soft fur came from rabbits. Men wore leggings and gloves. Men would rarely wear shirts. Moccasins were made from deer and elk skin. The fringes and detailing on the moccasins were made from animal fur. Jewelry was almost always worn. Men wore necklaces, and occasionally arm bands. Women wore necklaces and earrings.

12 Weapons The Native Americans had early weapons such s the bow and arrow. Common weapons include the bow and arrow, tomahawks, and spears. Bows weren't just used for war, they were also used for hunting. Tomahawks, being the most well known, were used just as much for tools as they were for weapons. They were a major form of trade. Arrow heads were fashioned out of stone and are no collectables.

13 Army The Cheyenne called their warriors Cheyenne Dog Soldiers.
Plain Indians fought along side the Lakota. Children were taught at young ages to fight. The greatest honor was touching the enemy no getting away unharmed. Cheyenne Dog Soldiers fought to the death.

14 Shelter/Travel The Plain Indians shelter was a traditional teepee made of deer skin, mud, and sticks. Most teepees were painted with berries. These homes would have to be moved by the women and could be set up quickly. The reason for this was so they could follow their food, or to find more fertile land. If you didn't travel with the group and you neede to go hunting, you would take the shelter anywhere you could.
