The Kinetic Molecular Theory & Properties of Fluids
Section 4.1 & 4.2
2
A fluid is any form of matter that can flow
Liquids and gases are fluids since they do not have a fixed shape. Solids are not fluids
4
Fluids fluids are substances that flow because some sort of force is exerted on them (eg. gravity) how quickly a fluid flows in a given amount of time is called its flow rate
5
Flow Around Objects Fluids that flow over objects in a straight line or almost straight is known as Laminar Flow Streamlined Object Fluids that break or go choppy when flowing over objects is known as Turbulent Flow, and may result in rapids eddies and whirlpools Object has resistance and referred to as drag

The Kinetic Molecular Theory
All matter is made up of very small particles (atoms and molecules) and there is empty space between particles. Particles are constantly moving. They collide with each other and the walls of their container. Particles of a solid are so tightly packed together they cannot move around freely, but can only vibrate. Particles of a liquid are farther apart and can move by sliding past each other. Particles of a gas are very far apart and move around quickly. There are forces of attraction among particles. Energy makes particles move. The more energy they have, the faster they can move and the farther apart they can get.
7
as heat energy is added, the particles increase their motion and the forces of attraction become less strong
