2 The Neglected R: The Need for a Writing Revolution
Writing today is not a frill for a few, but an essential skill for all The National Commission on Writing in America’s Schools. Before we discuss some of the benefits and actually get started using the program today, I want to bring up a really important report that came out earlier this year. (available in the Resource Center)It is about writing in US schools today.. Some of you may have heard of this.. It is called the Neglected R.. It was written by the National Commission on Writing in America’s Schools and Colleges. What they call for is that there is a need for a writing revolution.. “writing today is not a frill for a few, but an essential skill for all”. SO It is really important for students to develop strong writing skills to be able to succeed in education, higher education and future life whether it is working or doing other things.. Key recommendations of the study include the 1. The need for increased frequency of student writing—their recommendation is that students should double the amount of writing they do in classes. 2. Additionally, writing should be a component of all curriculum areas-not just English language Arts. 3. Next, assessments should not be limited to objective and multiple choice, but include essays. 4. Fourthly, is the importance of providing technology tools to assist teachers in not just teaching of writing, but also scoring of student papers. 5. Finally, providing the professional development to apply the technology to help teachers teach writing and help students become independent and proficient writers. 12/9/2018
