Lines and Planes Chapter 7 Section 7.1

Objective The students will learn to identify rays, lines and segments.

Vocabulary Point – is a location, has no size and named by a capital letter Point A A n point B B Line – series of points that extend in opposite directions without end, it is named by two points on the line or by a lower case letter Point A A n point B B AB, BA , n Ray- part of a line with one end point and all of the points on the line in one direction, it is named by the endpoint and one other point on the line starting with the endpoint A B AB, ray AB Segment – is part of a line with two endpoints and is named by the end points A B AB, BA

Examples - Naming segments, rays and lines
X Y G R T J

More Vocabulary Plane – a flat surface that extends infinitely in all directions and has no thickness Intersecting lines – they lie in the same plane and intersect at only one point Parallel lines – lines that lie in the same plane but never intersect. Parallel segments and rays lie in parallel lines. Skew lines – lie in different planes, they are neither parallel or intersecting

Example Name 2 intersecting segments, 2 parallel segments and 2 skew segments F E A C B G D H

Questions?

Exit Ticket Label the line, ray and segment below Name a parallel, intersecting and skew line from the figure below A H Z X H S Y W Y Z U T S
