When light waves strike an object, some of the waves are absorbed by the object, some are reflected by it, and some might pass through it.
What happens to light when it strikes the object depends on the material that the object is made of.

All objects reflect and absorb some light waves. Materials that let no light pass through
them are opaque (oh PAYK).
You cannot see other objects through opaque materials.

On the other hand, you clearly can see other objects through materials such as glass and clear plastic that allow nearly all the light that strikes them to pass through.
These materials are transparent.
