1 Today’s Agenda… Flashback (Get your clickers!)
Discuss Homework and Energy Transformations Notes on Temperature and Heat No Homework

2 Temperature and Heat Study Pack # 4

3 Today’s Goals… I can distinguish between temperature and heat.
I can explain how heat moves.

4 Tell me what you know… True or False
Solids contain particles that are constantly moving Particles in matter have kinetic energy As temperature increases, kinetic energy decreases Heat moves from the colder object to the warmer object Heat will continue to flow until both objects are the same temperature

5 Temperature and Kinetic Energy
In solids the particles are close together and vibrate in place In liquids the particles are farther apart and move freely around each other In gases the particles are very far apart and move very quickly in all directions

6 Temperature and Kinetic Energy
Because the particles are MOVING, they have kinetic energy Which one has the most kinetic energy…..particles in a solid, liquid, or gas? Gas – because they are moving faster!

7 Temperature and Kinetic Energy
How can we increase the kinetic energy of the particles? Heat the substances – this will cause the particles to move faster and have more energy

8 Temperature and Kinetic Energy
Temperature measures the kinetic energy The higher the temperature, the more kinetic energy the particles have See page 171, Figure 12

9 Temperature and Kinetic Energy
Fahrenheit Scale (water) 32 degrees is freezing 212 degrees is boiling Celsius Scale (water) 0 degrees is freezing 100 degrees is boiling

10 Heat A transfer of energy from one object to another due to a difference in temperature is called heat Heat always moves from the warmer object to the cooler one Heat will stop flowing when both objects are the same temperature

11 Did you get it?? True or False
Solids contain particles that are constantly moving Particles in matter have kinetic energy As temperature increases, kinetic energy decreases Heat moves from the colder object to the warmer object Heat will continue to flow until both objects are the same temperature

12 What did you learn? Exit Slip
Explain why the particles in solids, liquids, and gases have kinetic energy. Which has the most and why?
