Part of a larger European Conflict known as The Seven Years War British attempted to seize French territory in Canada and the Ohio River valley Both sides had Native American allies - French had more Native Allies - Sometimes one NA group fought for both sides

Britain commits more troops and wins Treaty of Paris signed in 1763 - Britain gains most of France's North American colonies When the war was over the British attempted to tax the colonies as payment for the expenses involved in protecting them

Pontiac's War - Balance of power changed with British victory in the seven years war - Iroquois can no longer play both sides - They were no longer a valuable potential ally - The Seneca carried a red wampum belt (offer to ally in war) to several western tribes - War named after Chief Pontiac, who attacked Fort Detroit - Name is misleading

- Native Americans never agreed to any cease fire or treaty - Native Americans were eventually defeated - Despite that, the war made the British more cautious of them - British proclamation of 1763 was largely a response to this

- Colonists not allowed to settle or claim land west of the Appalachian Mountains - Meant to reduce tension with Native Americans - Meant to help maintain law and order - British troops deployed to enforce the proclamation
