A landmark case is a court case that is studied because it has historical and legal significance.
The most significant cases are those that have had a lasting effect on how laws are applied, often concerning your individual rights and liberties.

The Fifth Amendment: “protects a person against being compelled to be a witness against himself or herself in a criminal case” Miranda believed he had been violated of this right.

Clarence Gideon arrested in Florida for breaking into a pool hall.
Gideon was poor and couldn’t afford counsel (lawyer), had to defend himself. Found guilty, but Gideon felt he didn’t have a fair trail without a lawyer. He appealed to Supreme Court while in prison. GIDEON v. WAINWRIGHT

The Sixth Amendment provides, “In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right…to have the Assistance of Counsel for his defense. Gideon believed he had been violated of this right.

Why are these cases important?
The Supreme Court cases Miranda v. Arizona and Gideon v. Wainwright questioned the integrity of America’s legal system and the verdicts of said cases helped to ensure that the rights of the accused would be upheld, while making sure that the accused would get a fair shot to prove their innocence. Why are these cases important?

Arizona retried him, without the confession, and a jury again convicted him.

What Happened to Clarence Gideon?
He was retried. The Jury found him not guilty after only an hour of deliberation.
