1 For the following quote, identify who the speaker is, what action is surrounding the quote (context), and why the quote is significant to the novel and to our reading overall. You may grab a Scarlet Letter book. “Life had never brought them a gloomier hour; it was the point whither their pathway had so long been tending, and darkening ever, as it stole along; - and yet it inclosed a charm that made them linger upon it, and claim another, and another, and, after all, another moment.”

2 Thoughtful Questions

3 In the case of good books, the point is not to see how many of them you can get through, but rather how many can get through to you. Reading Check!

4 On a piece of paper…. Identify four meaningful and crucial quotes from The Scarlet Letter, just like we analyzed in our warm up. (25 points each) Three of the quotes must come from Chapters 17-24, and one of them can come from anywhere in the text. DO NOT use the quote from the warm up or I will count it wrong. Your analysis must include: The quote, who the speaker is, and the page number it can be found on (5 points) The context surrounding the quote – what is happening at this point of the story? (5 points) An explanation and analysis of why this quote is significant to the story as a whole and to our reading and interpretation of what is happening in the story. (15 points) You will only have 30 minutes to work on this

5 10 minutes to finish Responsibility Chart
You will have ten minutes to work with your partner and finish your responsibility charts for The Crucible. If you finish before then, you may work on your project.

6 Whatever happened to Pearl?
Analyze the ending of the story by thinking about what ultimately might have happened to the characters. Based on information given to us in the text, what do you think might have happened to Pearl after the conclusion of the story? Did she go on to a new village to be a wealthy patron in society? Did her wild ways ever calm down? Did she end up getting married (and if so, what did she tell her own kids about her childhood)? Did she die very young from her wild behaviors?

7 Questions to Discuss Some critics say that Hester Prynne was the first American heroine. Others say that her silent suffering isn’t truly heroic. What qualities and actions make a character heroic? Are there any heroes or heroic actions in The Scarlet Letter?  If Hester Prynne is the protagonist of The Scarlet Letter, who is the antagonist? Which of these characters (if any) do you believe serves as the villain in the novel? Why? Throughout America’s history, there have always been laws that regulated citizens’ personal behavior (speeding, wearing helmets, etc). Where should society draw the line between personal and political actions? Should society have the right to tell you how to behave on your own time?
