Types of Multimedia Authoring Programs
Authoring programs are categorized mainly by the way they work. Electronic slide show Advantages: Inexpensive to create Easy to use Easy to learn Templates available that can be customized Disadvantage: Predominately linear presentations Card/book metaphor Advantages: Easy to learn Direct relationship between what is on a card or page and what is displayed on a screen. Disadvantages: Usually run on one platform Usually limited compared to other authoring programs. Multimedia Authoring Programs-are used to create multimedia applications. Four types of Multimedia Authoring Programs are as follows: Electronic Slide Show Microsoft's PowerPoint is the most popular and widely used Card/Book Metaphors HyperCard was one of the first multimedia programs to use card metaphor and was developed by Apple in 1987. HyperStudio is a more recent version of HyperCard. Toolbook is a book metaphor authoring program. Open script is a scripting language for toolbook.

Icon-based authoring programs use flowchart to represent content or event. Advantage: Flow of content or event easily seen. Disadvantages: Less insightful Difficult to learn Expensive Time-based authoring programs are like movies that play until some action causes it to stop. Advantage: Users can branch to different parts of movies Icon-based programs Macromedia Authorware is a popular icon-based authoring program. It is excellent for teaching applications. Time-based programs Macromedia Director is a popular timed-based, authoring program, which uses movie metaphor. Camtasia Studio is a popular screen capturing software that is excellent for teaching computer procedures.

Web-based authoring programs include: Macromedia flash to develop 2-D animations; Director shockwave studio to create multimedia applications for CD-ROM, DVD, and Web delivery Shockwave to play applications created with Macromedia Director VRML (Virtual Reality Modeling Language) used to create interactive 3-D multimedia environments on the web. Programming languages use programming codes of instructions to be performed by computers. Advantage: Flexibility (program can be written to perform specific instructions) Disadvantage: Time consuming; since not specific for multimedia title creation Programming languages used to produce sophisticated features such as creating animations and searching databases. C++, Visual Basic, Perl are basic languages. Java and JavaScript are extensively used for web applications. SMIL(Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language)-program that enables developers to specify what, when it, and transition of what is presented. Multimedia titles are created using authoring programs, programming languages, or a combination of both.
