1 Replacement of Vehicle Bridge over Spring Creek
Design Project #1 Replacement of Vehicle Bridge over Spring Creek Centre County, PA Introduction to Engineering Design EDGSN 100 Section 001 CARV Designers Team 2 Varshini Chellapilla Alexis Pritchard Cameron Wilson Rafael Saavedra Insert Your Bridge Photo here Insert Your Design Team Photo here Presented to: Prof. Berezniak Fall 2016

2 Statement of Problem Bridge located over Spring Creek on Puddintown Road destroyed due to local flooding. Bridge failure due to collapse of main pier by erosion from fast moving flood water Disturbance to residential traffic flow, local commerce and access to Mount Nittany Medical Center. Residents remain at considerable risk. Use this slide to create a new slide—use this template slide if you would prefer to have a Penn State blue background for your slides. 2

3 Objective Pennsylvania Department of Transportation of (PennDOT) Engineering District 2-0 Fast track project to design a new bridge over Spring Creek Under $250,000 Use this slide to create a new slide—use this template slide if you would prefer to have a Penn State blue background for your slides. 3

4 Design Criteria Through-type steel truss bridge Single span, no piers
Bridge must be Warren or Howe Standard abutments Deck material shall be medium strength concrete (0.23 meters thick) Bridge deck elevation = 20 meters | Deck span = 40 meters Steel member type, steel cross section type, and steel member size is upto Design Team. 5 Technical Approach Phase 1: Economic Efficiency
-Price: under 250,000 $ -Both of the bridges respected the budget given. Warren Bridge with a cost of 248,799$ Both bridges used hollow carbon steel tubes in order to be within the budget range. Use this slide to create a new slide—use this template slide if you would prefer to have a Penn State blue background for your slides. Howe Bridge with a cost of 249,038$ 5

6 Technical Approach Phase 2: Structural Efficiency
Both the Warren Bridge and the Howe Bridge used hollow carbon steel tubes. They were within the budget and had the structural capacity to hold up a live load (the truck.) They were also capable of holding up their own dead load.  Use this slide to create a new slide—use this template slide if you would prefer to have a Penn State blue background for your slides. 6

7 Results Phase 1: Economic Efficiency
We had to find a way to utilize every popsicle/member to it's full potential We did so by starting our framework at bare minimum and evenly distributing the popsicle sticks until they were all completely even Strength Point of critical failure Use this slide to create a new slide—use this template slide if you would prefer to have a Penn State blue background for your slides. Span of the bridge Strength Point of critical failure 7 Span of the bridge

8 Results Phase 2: Structural Efficiency
In order to minimize the cost, we had to maximize the function of each member/popsicle stick  Avoided gluing multiple popsicles directly adjacent with one another, as we realized the strength would more likely be needed in the joints   In an effort to strengthen the joints, we interlocked most of the popsicles on the joints, where we felt they would be the weakest The fault lied in the joints in the Howe Truss Bridge- The members were not glued as correctly, and the width of the bridge on one side was not held constant throughout the top and bottom chord Use this slide to create a new slide—use this template slide if you would prefer to have a Penn State blue background for your slides. 8

9 Best Solution Technical Approach:
-The best bridge to use would be the Warren Bridge           -support the load test           -cheaper           -more structural efficient  Results:      -The best bridge to use would be the Warren Bridge          -held more weight          -both used same amount of materials, but the Warren Bridge used  them more efficiently  Use this slide to create a new slide—use this template slide if you would prefer to have a Penn State blue background for your slides. 9

10 Conclusions Warren Bridges are more cost efficient and can hold more weight when given the same amount of materials  Use this slide to create a new slide—use this template slide if you would prefer to have a Penn State blue background for your slides. 10

11 Recommendations -When designing the bridges in the experimental phase, use a better glue, that way glue will not play a factor in the bridge's structural integrity  -Also, collaborating with other teams could have allowed for a better overall design because when engineers work together, that Use this slide to create a new slide—use this template slide if you would prefer to have a Penn State blue background for your slides. 11
