2 What is a common school? The Common School Movement is a public, tax supported school. First established in Massachusetts during the 19th century.

3 Horace Mann Nations leading advocate of a common school.
The father of public schools. Help created the Massachusetts state bored of education. Became secretary of the Massachusetts state board of education. Believed public education should serve both practical and idealistic goals.

4 First three states to have public education were Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania.
North Carolina was one of a few southern states to establish public schools.

5 Corporal Punishment Horace Mann opposed the routine practice of corporal punishment. He believe students should be positively motivated to learn.

6 Civil War Majority of southern states didn’t establish public schooling until after the civil war.
