1 Properties of Ionic Compounds
Made of a metal and nonmetal Crystalline solids with high melting points Ionic compounds conduct as an aqueous solution…called electrolytes. Form crystals which break as solids when struck. (See p 215.) The energy to break one mole of ions , of an ionic compound, is called lattice energy.

2 Namining Acids When hydrogen is the positive ion the compound is an acid. H_ or HX where x is an anion. 3 rules for naming acids Hydro_ic acid (anion ends in ide) _____ous acid (anion ends in ite) _____ic acid (anion ends in ate)

3 Metal Properties Metals exist as metal ions with a free moving sea of electrons. This gives the properties of malleability, ductility, and electrical conductivity. These electrons are called delocalized electrons. An alloy is a mixture of metals. A substitutional alloy has one or more other metals mixed. An interstitial alloy is formed by putting small atoms in the spaces of a crystal.

4 Coordination Number Metals and Ionic compounds form crystal patterns.
The number of + around – and – around + are equal and this number is called the coordination number.
