2 Fig 1 Von Willebrand factor (vWF) degradation was examined in mock circulatory loops with the HeartMate II (top panel) and the EVAHEART left ventricular assist system (LVAS [bottom panel]). Both devices reduced large vWF multimers and increased small vWF multimers (agarose blot) as well as significantly increased vWF degradation fragments (polyacrylamide blot). However, the HeartMate II caused significantly more vWF degradation than the EVAHEART LVAS. Black bars indicate baseline; dark gray bays indicate 6 hours; light gray bars indicate 12 hours. Immmunoblots represent duplicate samples studied with two different methods: (1) agarose gel electrophoresis to resolve high-molecular-weight vWF multimers; and (2) polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis to resolve vWF degradation fragments.
