11 Introduction What we’ve looked at What we’re looking at now
Transitions Animations What we’re looking at now Advanced Animations Paths Triggers Advanced Effects

12 Advanced Animations We’ve looked at the basics of animations
However, there is a lot more we can do Animation paths Triggers

13 Advanced Animations We deal with paths whenever we use an animation that has A green dot A red dot A line between them The green dot is the start point The red dot is the end point The line between is the path an element will follow in this animation

14 Advanced Animations There are a few pre-made paths for us to use
Straight lines Arcs (circular paths) Shapes Loops We can also create our own paths using the Custom Path animation

15 Advanced Animations Exercise
Create a new presentation in PowerPoint Save it as “[Your Name] Animations” Add a Blank slide to this presentation

16 Advanced Animations Let’s start with basic animation paths
If you click on this rectangle, the circle will move downwards

17 Advanced Animations This is what that circle (along with its path) looks like in PowerPoint’s editor The green arrow states where the element starts The red arrow states where it stops The red line next to the red arrow means Stop The dotted line is the path the circle will take The duration of the animation changes how long the circle takes to complete this path

18 Advanced Animations Exercise
Add a circle to this slide (design it however you like) Select it and then choose a Line animation from the Animations tab Make sure this animation happens after the user clicks on this slide Test this animation out by viewing the presentation

19 Advanced Animations The line path doesn’t have to just go downwards
We can edit the paths by changing the Effect Options Try clicking on this button and see how the different circles move

20 Advanced Animations Exercise
Add three more circles to your slide Make them all move in different directions Still along a straight line Make sure they all start at the same time Still only start when the presenter clicks on the slide

21 Advanced Animations Here are some more path types you can easily use
We can customise each of these paths in the Effect Options list Arc Turn Shape

22 Advanced Animations Exercise
Add another Blank slide to your presentation Add at least one of each of these animation path types (using a circle for the animation) Arc Turn Loop Add at least two different animation paths for the Shapes animation (change which shape it uses through the Effect Options list)

23 Advanced Animations We have even more control over what paths an animation uses Edited via the Edit Points option in the Effect Options list Not all paths let us edit their points

24 Advanced Animations When we choose to edit points, black squares will appear along the animation’s path We can click-and-drag these squares to change the path that the animation will use

25 Advanced Animations Exercise
For your shape paths, try changing their points (via Edit Points) Try turning them into different shapes

26 Advanced Animations If we want to find more pre-made animation paths, we can In the Animations tab, click on the arrow to the side of the animation list This will open a big list of all the default animations We need to click on More Motion Paths

27 Advanced Animations This will show a window of all the pre-made motion path animations we can use Simply click on an animation and click on OK to apply it to the selected element

28 Advanced Animations Exercise
Add another Blank slide to your presentation Add two shapes to this slide (designed however you like) Give both of these shapes motion-path animations Choose More Motion Paths to see a big list Make them both play at the start of the slide

29 Advanced Animations The final thing to cover about motion paths is that we can create our own custom ones In the list of animations, there’s a choice for Custom Path

30 Advanced Animations When we choose this option, we get to place a starting point for the path From there If we click-and-drag we create a free-form path (the path goes wherever our mouse goes) If we click and then move the mouse we create a straight line

31 Advanced Animations Here is an example
This is made by clicking at the centre of the circle and dragging downwards We can press the Esc key to end a path

32 Advanced Animations This is what the animation looks like

33 Advanced Animations Exercise
Add a Blank slide to your presentation Add a shape (of your choice) to this presentation Give this shape a custom motion path for its animation Try and make it spell out your initials Make it play as soon as the slide starts

34 Advanced Animations You may have noticed that, in this presentation, there were times when an animation only played when a button was pressed This is because we added a trigger to that animation Much like how a presentation can continue when the user clicks, we can get animations to play when we click on something in the slide This doesn’t have to be buttons; we can do this with anything

35 Advanced Animations When we have an animation, we can click on the Trigger button to show a list of triggers we can use The one we use the most is On Click of Triggers the animation when we click on an element

36 Advanced Animations The On Click of list contains all the elements in the current slide They’ll often contain names like “Text” or “Rectangle” You’ll have to perform some trial and error here (keep trying different elements until you get the right one)

37 Advanced Animations When you choose the correct element, you’ll be able to play the animation when you click on that element Great for including some interactivity to a presentation

38 Advanced Animations Exercise
Add another shape to your slide (with the animation that spells your initials) Add some text to this shape saying something along the lines of “Play” Make the initials animation only play when you click on this new shape

39 Advanced Animations The final thing to cover in this unit is the ability to add more advanced effects/timings to animations In the Animation Pane, we can right-click on an animation and choose Effect Options

40 Advanced Animations This shows a window where we can customise the effects of animations Take a look at these examples Default Loop Reverse Reverse and Loop

41 Advanced Animations That was all handled in the different tabs of the Effect Options window

42 Advanced Animations Some generally useful options
Smooth start and end determine whether the animation starts/ends suddenly or smoothly Bounce end adds a little bounce when the animation ends Auto-reverse makes the animation play out in ‘reverse’ after it finishes (useful for getting the element back into its starting position) Repeat makes the animation loop (for as many times as you tell it to)

43 Advanced Animations Exercise
Add a Blank slide to your presentation See if you can create a ‘pendulum’ animation with a shape (of your choice) HINT: Use an Arc motion path to start Make sure this pendulum swings back-and-forth
