Naming Acids ACIDS Ionic compounds with unique properties
TOPIC #17 ACIDS Ionic compounds with unique properties A compound that contains 1 or more hydrogen ions (H+) when dissolved in water
2
ACIDS are ionic compounds where the cation is H+ and it is bonded to an anion. In order to correctly name them we must look at the ending (“Suffix”) of the anion . For Example: Sulfide ends in “-ide” Sulfite ends in “ –ite” Sulfate ends in “-ate” Each one has a different rule to name.
3
Rules For Naming Acids ACIDS
If it ends in “ite”, drop the “hydrogen”, and change to __________ous Acid Example: H2SO3 = Hydrogen Sulfite H2SO3 = Sulfurous Acid 3. If it ends in “ate”, drop the “hydrogen”, and change to ____________ic Acid H2SO4 = Hydrogen Sulfate H2SO4 = Sulfuric Acid Rules: 1. If it ends in “ide”, name it as “hydro ________ ic acid” Example: H2S = Hydrogen Sulfide H2S = Hydrosulfuric Acid ACIDS
4
Write the chemical name for the following formulas, then write the acid name.
1. HPO4 Hydrogen Phosphate Phosphoric Acid HClO3 Hydrogen Chlorate Chloric Acid 3. HCl Hydrogen Chloride Hydrochloric Acid HClO Hydrogen Hypochlorite Hypochlorous Acid
