The 6 Greatest Categories of waste STEPCHANGE CAMPAIGN 24% 16% 27% 18% 9% 6% Biggest Energy Wasters: Heating Lighting Computers

Category 1 (Thermal Comfort ): Heating around campus is too high Conditioned air is often being wasted Recommendations: Reduce heating temperatures Allow for more control via local thermostats or ventilation Quotes: It is uncomfortably hot even on cold days, so we end up opening the windows. In the library everyone only wore a t-shirt during January and February (the outside temp was -5 o C) STEPCHANGE CAMPAIGN

Category 1 contd (Thermal Comfort ): Air conditioning in some areas is excessive Recommendations: Reduce cooling temperatures Allow for more control via local thermostats or ventilation Quotes: I had many lectures in LT664 Mech Eng from January - March. The air con in this room was constantly on even when there was snow falling outside! Nobody could turn the air con off and students sat in their coats and scarves. STEPCHANGE CAMPAIGN

Category 3 (Lighting): Lights are left on when not needed (at night, in unoccupied areas, in ample dayli ght) Recommendations: Install presence and photocell sensors Educate people to turn lights off Assign responsibility Set reminders Quotes: So Lights in the SAF labs are on over night. I am the only lab who switches them off. After a class takes place, nobody bothers to turn the lights off. STEPCHANGE CAMPAIGN

Category 4 (Equipment): Computers and other equipment are left on when not used/overnight Recommendations: Educate people to turn computers off Set up an automatic /central shut down Set up the VPN so that you don't need your computer left on to access it remotely Quotes: In an office of around 10 people, I am the only one who turns off my computer at the end of each day! Aeronautics department has 60 computers inaccessible from 23:00 to 07:00 yet they remain switched on the entire time. STEPCHANGE CAMPAIGN

Category 5 (Waste & Recycling): The College could recycle more Recommendations: Build awareness on recycling Have a recycling bin next to all printers Widen the range of recycling bins ( i.e. to include food waste recycling) Quotes: In the hospital campuses most of the waste that seems to fill the bin is plastic bottles or paper rubbish. We only have one paper bin on our floor. STEPCHANGE CAMPAIGN

Next Steps for FM Prioritise recommendations Set an implementation plan & assign responsibility Communicate findings and action plan Implement changes STEPCHANGE CAMPAIGN
