Lotus Plus 2 Electric Motor Light Pod Wiring Dec 2009 with Stu’s specific loom modifications Motor Stop Ground Black RB20BC relay from Vehicle Wiring Products (or equivalent) POD MAIN POWER Hot at all times, fused Purple Relay Control Ground Black Green to Orange / Red CONTROL SIGNAL TO RELAY Wiper always in contact with rotary switch disc Blue to Orange / Blue DOWN SIGNAL TO ROTARY SWITCH From headlight Micro-switch “S1 – NC” Unused terminal in stock set-up Wiper contacts rotary switch disc in up position White / Red to Orange / Green MAIN MOTOR POWER Pod Motor Diode Motor Main Ground White / Black to Black Based on 1980’s Toyota Celica pod motor and 1971 Lotus Plus 2 Federal. Specific wire colours may vary with different cars. Used Orange / Blue for down signal in modified loom . (connects to Blue on motor unit). Used Orange / Yellow for up signal in modified loom . (connects to Yellow on motor unit). Used Orange / Green for main motor power in modified loom . (connects to White / Red on motor unit). Use Orange / Red for rotary switch control signal to relay. (connects to green on motor unit). Used Purple for main pod power in modified loom. (connects directly to relay terminal 87). Used Black for motor main ground in modified loom. (connects to White / Black on motor unit). Used Black for other grounds in modified loom. (connects directly to relay terminals 85 & 87a). Motor moves thru 180 degrees only for each up or down pod movement. Clocking of motor may be required when mounting. Depending on motor mounting position, the blue and yellow control wires may need reversing. As the crank rods are connected to rear of pod, pod motor arm is in “down” or lowest position when light pods are up, and in “up” or highest position when light pods are down. Different pod motors from various donor cars appear to have the arms stop at different clock positions. This may require clocking either the motor or the arm on the motor shaft by disconnecting crank from motor shaft. 15 amp fuse for motor supply (Purple, hot at all times, fused). This value should be confirmed with an ammeter when pod load is connected. Unsure if this is appropriate for one or two motors. Have based 15 amp value on half of 30 amp fuse in the posted MX5 Miata wiring diagram, which uses two motors. Motor current only goes thru R20BC relay terminals 30 & 87. All other terminals on the relay are for the control circuit only, and therefore draw very little current. They are already fused in the Lucas Uni-Loom setup by the fuse protecting the light switch relay control circuit. The relay control coils are not activated in the down position. Pods retract when headlights are turned off ; no current draw in off position Normally closed (NC) relay terminal 87a grounds out motor supply. This causes motor rotation to stop immediately. Motor rotation will continue indefinitely without this ground connection due to momentum in motor causing skipping over rotary switch gaps. As noted, this diagram applies to my 1971 Lotus Plus 2 Federal. Wiring of headlights is different for other Lotus models. My Federal set-up has the two micro-switches integral to the dash mounted headlight switch. Only one of the micro-switches is used in this circuit; the other micro-switch is used to control of the sidelight circuit. I have designated the headlight micro-switch “S1” and the sidelight micro-switch “S2” f or clarity. Both Federal micro-switches are equipped with Normally Open (NO) and Normally Closed (NC) terminals. If the car is not set up this way, an additional relay MAY be required to provide the NC terminal required for the down signal to the pod motors. This NC terminal is not used in the stock Lotus setup, but is present on the switch. I have not investigated this possible additional requirement in detail. Yellow to Orange / Yellow UP SIGNAL TO ROTARY SWITCH From headlight Micro-switch “S1 – NO” Blue to column switch in stock set-up Wiper contacts rotary switch disc in down position Based on Toyota Celica pod motor. and 1971 Lotus Plus 2 Federal. Specific wire colours may vary with different cars. Single motor only shown. Pods are mechanically connected in Federal Plus 2. Double up circuit if two motors required. Motor & rotary switch moves thru 180 degrees only for each up or down pod movement. 15 amp fuse for motor supply (Purple, hot at all times, fused). Motor current only goes thru R20BC relay terminals 30 & 87. Normally closed (NC) relay terminal 87a grounds out motor supply. This causes motor rotation to stop immediately. Motor rotation will continue indefinitely without this ground connection. Rotary Switch Rotary switch shown in “Pod Down” position. Diodes, rotary switch, & motor are contained within motor housing from donor car.
