3 “ADVANCED DISTRIBUTION MANAGEMENT SYSTEM.”
BY CRAIG SCHAUB

4 CONTROL ENGINEERING MANAGER
BRIEF BIO Craig Schaub manages a team of Engineers, Analysts and Technicians who maintain Austin Energy’s real-time control systems such as SCADA and ADMS. He has more than 30 years’ experience in power system automation as well as protection, telecommunications and metering. CRAIG SCHAUB CONTROL ENGINEERING MANAGER AUSTIN ENERGY

5 OVERVIEW & ABSTRACT SUMMARY North America’s Electric Utility industry is experiencing a significant evolution related to the operation of our power networks. While the Bulk Electric System (made up of transmission lines and substations) has enjoyed granular remote control and monitoring for decades (in the form of SCADA/EMS), this level of automation is only recently being pushed out onto the Distribution System. 6 THE ELEMENTS ONE TWO THREE FOUR “NEAR REAL TIME” AWARENESS
WHAT IS HAPPENING THE ELEMENTS A mixture of elements is enabling a proliferation of Distribution Automation technologies: ONE TWO Microprocessors are becoming more powerful and less expensive Telecommunication networks are becoming more ubiquitous “NEAR REAL TIME” AWARENESS These forces are resulting in a rapid expansion of “near real time” awareness and control associated with power networks. This presentation should outline Austin Energy’s ongoing effort to modernize grid operations while maintaining safety, security and continuity of service to our customers. We will describe our new Advanced Distribution Automation System (ADMS) which is the central platform integrating much of our automation efforts as well as the power apparatus being equipped with remote control and monitoring capabilities. 8 POWER TRANSFORMERS WRITE A GREAT TITLE Power transformers are one of the most critical assets of the electrical transmission and distribution system. Monitoring of transformers is a process of acquiring and processing of data related to various parameters so as to predict and prevent the failure of a power transformer. CPS Energy’s fleet of power transformers is composed of 229 units from different manufacturers, different models, different voltages and a range of ages. CPS Energy’s Asset Management department is challenged with devising a monitoring and ranking strategy for these power transformers to establish the risk of failure or need for replacement to assure a reliable system . This presentation shows CPS Energy ranking system that prioritizes the annual candidates for replacement and for the DGA retrofit program..

YOU CAN WRITE HERE TEXT WITH IMAGE BACKGROUND Taking advantage of high speed digital peer-peer communication introduced by the IEC standard for Fault Recording (FR) applications, we can improve system reliability and replace traditional hard-wiring between Intelligent Electronic Devices (IED). In this paper we first discuss the basic concepts of the standard relating to FR application and then concentrate on the handling of virtual binary inputs (BI), triggering the FR IED and setting the priority of important records via Goose messages.
