Geological Surveys agree to fund own data generation? some Geological Surveys agree to provide support to those who cannot generate their own data? a core of Geological Surveys agree to provide resources to coordinate the project and operate the portal (BGS is prepared to be one of these) EU provide funds to take the project forward (there is a real possibility in the eContentplus programme) What other sources are available……..?

15. 15 What are our strategies for nations needing technical and funding assistance?

16. 16 Strategies for assistance Some nations will need technical and/or resource assistance to take part Possible solutions: OneGeology Help Teams to work with staff of the Survey Other Surveys agree to scan/convert/load data But……. How will we provide the assistance? How are we going to fund this?

17. 17 Who owns the data? Intellectual Property Rights and Copyright

18. 18 Who owns the data? Simple assumption - each Geological Survey provider retains ownership of the intellectual property of the data they contribute But what are implications if there are different use conditions applied by different Geological Surveys? –Will some geological Surveys wish to restrict use or charge? Can we develop a model (template) IPR Agreement which all can agree on? –This is what INSPIRE will do for European spatial data

20. 20 What other related initiatives are there and how do we link to them? For example - INSPIRE, GEOSS, AEGOS….. –(more on these on Thursday) How do we get to know about those initiatives which are relevant? How do we achieve a constructive and worthwhile links with them that add value?

22. 22 The risks and problems Not getting the message across about what OneGeology is/is not Diverse views of what OneGeology should be and do –map or interoperability, simple or sophisticated Encouraging participation Perceived overlap/conflict with other international geoscience initiatives Ownership and geo-politics Internal national complications –(eg which survey/institute should be the representative; priority of OneGeology against other tasks) Range of participant capability Where will the funds/resources come from? Sustaining the initiative challenges and opportunities

24. 24 Communication, PR and Marketing Do we assume we want to ……. Keep the profile of the project high? Use all ethical and legal means to do that? Produce scientific papers, conference presentations, articles, press and media releases? ….and …..? How do we best achieve this? Should we have one Team responsible for communication?

26. 26 Recruiting more Geological Surveys to OneGeology How do we continue to add more Surveys to the list of participants? Are there any obvious methods that we have not used to date? Can we use OneGeology Regional Teams and their contacts to help us to recruit more nations?

28. 28 We would like to use the Workshop to develop and AGREE a series of resolutions For example 1. "Geological Surveys will work together to create a distributed international geological information system of digital data through the use of a common standard and protocol, that does not impinge on ownership or control of data, and builds upon existing national data systems."
