1 The Lost Son - Luke 15:11-32 After reading the parable of The Lost Son, decide: What was the setting? Who were the main characters? What vocabulary was used?

2 Why Did Jesus Use Parables?
Jesus used parables so that his listeners would understand their meaning. His audience was made up of everyday people, such as farmers, fishermen and shepherds. He used everyday language, objects, settings and characters that his audience would be familiar with and understand.

3 Retelling the Story Click here to watch a modern version of The Lost Son.

4 What did the author change? Why?
Characters? Setting? Vocabulary? Meaning?

5 The Parable of the Rich Fool - Luke 12:16-21
16 And he told them this parable: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded an abundant harvest. 17 He thought to himself, ‘What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.’ 18 “Then he said, ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store my surplus grain. 19 And I’ll say to myself, “You have plenty of grain laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.”’ 20 “But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’ 21 “This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich toward God.”

6 The Parable of the Rich Fool
What was the moral of the story? Does it remind you of anything that has happened or could happen in your life? If you could change the parable to make it easier for a Grade 4 student to relate to, what would you change? Setting? Characters? Vocabulary? Your task: Rewrite the parable, including any changes that you think will help a Grade 4 student to better understand it.
