1 WHITE FRESH & FRUITY What are fresh and fruity white wines exactly? Do you taste apples, pears, or spring violets? First, let me point out that fresh and fruity white wines often come from cool climates, such as the French Loire region, German wine regions, or wine regions higher up in Spain and Austria. These wines obviously show the characteristics of certain grape varieties: fresh white wines often contain more acids than full, firm, and wood aged wines. They go perfectly with meals, but also do well at parties and park picnics. Mind you, they have to be served chilled at about 8 to 10 degrees Celsius. Riesling is a stubborn loner and has unrivaled possibilities: it usually has high acidic content, has a fresh mouthfeel, and tastes of freshly mowed grass, green apple, and citrus fruit. 4 STYLES OF RIESLING Riesling exists in several styles; from bone dry to decadently sweet, with honey and pear aromas. A good Riesling from the Alsace or Germany, for example, is also very suitable for aging. This will slowly create a smell of petroleum, which shows that it is a true wild one for enthusiasts. 6 Classic Chardonnay wines from Chablis, Meursault and elsewhere in Burgundy are complex and subtle. Their flavor and bouquet compliment each other; every sip reveals something new like a Russian nesting doll! Subtle flavors and aromas; vanilla, hazelnut and fresh white fruits, such as pear, melon and citrus fruit. Chardonnay is versatile: from fresh and fruity to full, mature and firm. More will be said about this in the next chapter. This wine will always remain an interesting topic to discuss! 7 SAUVIGNON BLANC The originally French grape variety from the Loire valley (of the famous Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé regions) became an appreciated first-class variety. In countries outside of Europe, Sauvignon Blanc has started a revolution. Connoisseurs feel that the nicest and purest Sauvignon Blanc comes from the cool Marlborough region in New Zealand. Sauvignon Blanc is fresh, white and fruity and has a whirling character; it almost whirls out of the glass! It smells and tastes of freshly mown grass, asparagus, lime and grapefruit. Sauvignon Blanc is a wine for a wide audience and can easily be combined with fresh salads, seafood and chicken, but it can also be drunk separately as an aperitif. 8 GRÜNER VELTLINER Herbs, spices, purely fresh and firm:we are, of course, talking about the Austrian Grüner Veltliner, Austria’s most planted grape variety. A true thirst quencher, but it also offers unparalleled possibilities. It tastes great with Asian cuisine or vegetable dishes and firm fish. 9 THE RIGHT ONE Be careful to choose a good producer or you might end up drinking a weak watery wine that tastes not unlike water from the Danube river, which runs through the capital Vienna (the little purple area on the map). When the label reads ‘Wachau’, ‘Smaragd’, or ‘Kamptal’ you made the right choice! Just about all Austrian wine regions are located in the east of the country. 10 ALBARIÑO The white Albariño wine is a light, dry white wine with apricot, pear and citrus fruit aromas, such as grapefruit. These citrus fruit aromas give it a slightly bitter aftertaste. Because of its unique flavor, the Spanish royal family frequently pours this wine for its guests. Rueda Verdejo wine creates a true experience with flavors of herbs, spices, white pepper and light tropical fruits; really everything that a white wine should taste of… There is some confusion about what Rueda wines exactly are; Rueda wine is not the same as Rueda Verdejo wine. 13 RUEDA Rueda is located just above the Spanish capital of Madrid. This old viticultural area has been revitalized over the last few years. Its soil and climate owe their characteristics to the fact that Rueda is on the northernmost part of Spain’s inner plateau (‘meseta central’ in Spain). Rueda stretches across a slightly sloping landscape among cities that played an important role in Spanish medieval history. When indigenous grape varieties, especially Verdejo, were extensively replanted in the region, a whole new generation of fresh, young, very fruity wines was created.
