1 The Hartree Centre STFC’s high performance computing, data analytics and cognitive computing (or AI) research centre Provides businesses and researchers access to powerful scientific computing technologies and expertise Primary purpose is to apply the latest digital, data-intensive and computing technologies to industry challenges Our mission: To transform the competitiveness of UK industry by accelerating the adoption of high performance computing (HPC), big data and cognitive technologies. At the Hartree Centre, we combine world class facilities and technologies with specialist technical expertise which go far beyond anything the market will provide. With our primary role being industrial engagement, we are enabling businesses to take advantage of the innovative opportunities provided by emerging digital technologies - supporting the realisation of the Government’s Industrial Strategy The Hartree Centre is the only supercomputing centre in the UK with industrial engagement as its primary role

2 Our track record The Hartree Centre
Based alongside STFC Daresbury Laboratory on the Sci-Tech Daresbury campus in the North West Staff based in the building include: STFC IBM Research University of Liverpool Virtual Engineering Centre First IBM Research base in the UK 25+ IBM Research staff 20 VEC staff Atos have a hot desking office & permanent technical staff Fostering collaboration and creating a hub for digital technical expertise to the North West Key asset in Northern Powerhouse Partner in LCR4.0 programme – 3 year programme to digitise SMEs in the Liverpool City Region, 100 SMEs engaged in the first year The University of Liverpool runs an MSc in Big Data and HPC in conjunction with the Hartree Centre

4 Hartree Centre Impact “Rolls-Royce has worked with the
Hartree Centre for many years due to their combination of highly skilled computational scientists and state-of-the-art HPC.” - Leigh Lapworth, Rolls-Royce “The Hartree Centre’s expertise made our testing process cheaper and more reliable, enabling us to get our product to market faster.” - William Wilson, GLOBAL-365 Report published October 2018 Hartree Centre Phase 1 & 2 Baseline Impact Evaluation: In 2017, we commissioned the Technopolis Group to carry out an independent baseline impact evaluation of our first four years of operation ( ) to explore the early benefits to UK industry and the economy. The report focused on our impact before the start of our cognitive programmes in partnership with IBM Research; Innovation Return on Investment (IROR) and the Cognitive Accelerator. Some of the findings of the report included: The Hartree Centre is the only supercomputing centre in the UK with industrial engagement as its primary role  Its services are “highly relevant to businesses in all sectors of the UK economy” It provides “a quality and breadth of services that goes beyond anything the market will provide” Businesses continue to return because of the combination of facilities and specialist skills Half of those consulted have seen or expect to see an increase in their sales income as a result of working with the Hartree Centre The centre is also making strong positive contributions to the innovative capacity, new product development, visibility, reputation and international competitiveness of its clients and users It is estimated that the centre’s direct work with industry during its early phases will generate a total net impact (GVA) of up to £27.5M in commercial benefits to users, based on their first three years from joining us In addition a £7.1M net impact generated from operational expenditure during the centre’s first four years This impact to industry is a conservative estimate - full benefits of early activities are still working their way through the system. With more organisations and partners able to value the contribution of the centre in the future, we expect the impact to increase The findings of this baseline evaluation are very positive for what is a young and relatively small centre of excellence Our economic impact in the early stages of our creation is already close to the £37.5M initial Government investment Please note: There are some complexities with aspects of the data and how it should be used. As outlined above, the findings do not reflect any of our cognitive computing projects or projects after late Also, there are two GVA figures of our impact – one for operational expenditure and one for commercial benefits to users. The timeframe and workings for these is different and therefore we would ask that you don’t add the two figures together. Case study: Rolls-Royce worked with the Hartree Centre to update its in-house engineering design software, accelerating runtimes and bringing it a step closer to virtual ‘whole-engine design’. Case study: Unilever’s packaging team estimates that digital product design has the potential to cut innovation process costs by up to 65% and reduce the time to market by up to 50%. By slashing run-times for even the most complex simulations from weeks to days or hours, we are helping Unilever to optimise the whole packaging design process. This accelerates decision making and improves sustainability by reducing the Case study need for physical testing. Case study: Working with us as part of the Sci-Tech Daresbury campus eco-system, SME WaveReach has sped-up prototype development through access to collaborative opportunities and equipment that would otherwise have been unaffordable The Hartree Centre has helped disruptive technology SME GLOBAL-365 to scale and test its software product, a service for topping up smart meters operating in prepayment mode that saves energy companies and their customers money.  William Wilson, Chief Executive of GLOBAL-365 commented: “The Hartree Centre’s expertise made our testing process cheaper and more reliable, enabling us to get our product to market faster.”

5 As part of our wider commitment to raise awareness about the potential of HPC and to build technical competencies by training the next generation of computing specialists, we host or contribute to a wide range of courses, events and workshops. We share our knowledge and expertise with clients to build in-house capabilities, for example by hosting post docs or providing one-to-one training. Case study: Infineum has paid for a post-doc at the Hartree Centre for 18 months to develop and internalise modelling capability and expertise within their own company.
