Why These Resources? Provide authoritative, age appropriate, curricular aligned content Google and Wikipedia are the tip of the searching and information literacy iceberg Allow students to become familiar and comfortable with the kind of resources and searching practises that are integral to 21st century learning Are time Savers once you are familiar with them Include embedded supports for diverse learners like listen, text translation, citation tools, vetted websites, copyright friendly pictures and videos Provide anytime, from anywhere with an internet connection access They provide accurate and trusted content that is age appropriate Each resource is personally vetted by the ORC Coordinator to ensure the content is very strongly aligned to the K-12 Alberta Curriculum So you can feel confident is using these resources with kids We know that students are shallow searches One click, and they are done In fact, according to a PEW research study, 94% of teachers feel that for students, “research” means Googling, and 75% of teachers feel Wikipedia is often the next step However, Google and Wikipedia are the tip of the searching and information literacy iceberg Because ORC resources trusted and curricular aligned, they allow students to become familiar and comfortable with the kind of resources and searching practices that are integral to the 21st century ORC resources are time savers once users are familiar with them Include a number of accessibility supports, like listen features, text translation, citation tools, vetted websites, and copyright friendly pictures and videos Provided anytime, from anywhere with an internet connection

What’s in it for teachers/Library staff?
Direct curricular correlations, ability to search curricular outcomes Support for diverse learners Access to journals like Walrus, National Geographic, School Library Journal, Men’s Health, and Maclean’s (RSS feeds can be set up) Consistent and explicit update schedules Access to vetted websites Ability to create permalinks that can be posted on a website/moodle page/blog or sent in an blast Well for one, all of the resources have direct curriculum correlations to science, social studies, Language Arts, IB Programs, and some French And, for Science and Social Studies, we have these handy curriculum maps that map each grade to the various resources in the collection As mentioned before, they provide support for diverse learners There is access to journals like the Walrus, National Geographic, School Library journal, Men’s Health, and MacLean’s They are consistent and explicitly updated And you have the ability to create permalinks that can be posted on a website, Moodle page, blog, social media and even blasts

Accessing the ORC Go the LearnAlberta.ca Select English or French
Click “Online Reference Centre” in the tab along the top of the screen In school automatic authentication should occur Outside of school access requires a district username and password LA___________ (username) ______________ (password) Share your district username and password using low tech methods - do not post on an open website for your remote username/password Go to LearnAlberta.ca Select English or French Click “Online Reference Centre in the tab along the top of the screen And the best part, users can access them anytime and from anywhere with an internet connection If you are accessing them from within a school, you are automatically logged in If you want to access them from home, then you just need the username and password assigned by your district, which you can easily get from me! Though we do ask that you share the username and password using low tech methods, so please do not post on an open website like a blog, or even social media, because these are licensed resources

Atlas home screen has a map of the world and links to articles about the world, and the map contains geographical and political entities (Geopolitical), Thematic brings up a World Agriculture map, Exploration generates a map of the routes of early explorers, and Global Distances finder The maps are interactive so you can click on them to get a closer look at places and access various articles Can also search within the atlas, and then use the links at the top to further narrow down your search results At the bottom of the homepage is a link for Librarians/Teachers, which takes you to various resources that you can use for your library or classroom Search a term in the search box and you will be taken to the search results page In the blue bar at the top of the results page is the Advanced Search feature, a link to the Go Tube collection, a link to World Newspapers, and a link to an atlas Underneath the blue bar are the different kind of related results you can access (All, Articles, Images, Videos, More Info – tables, charts - . and web sites (The search results are linked to the Scholastic Internet Index, which is a collection of credible and authoritative websites related to the article topic that are checked regularly for accuracy, appropriateness, and no excessive advertising) Click on these links to narrow down the results Article results have the reading levels indicated Clicking on one of the reading level filters the articles so only the ones with the corresponding reading level are shown Advanced search lets you locate articles by Lexile level, limit search to titles only, and can use Boolean Operators Articles: at the top, you still have access to the search bar and advanced search, as well as dictionaries (can double click any word and then click dictionary to see word definition), Go Tube, World News, and the Atlas Under the blue bar you can access the Table of Contents for the article, the standards alignment, ing the article (sends article as an rather than sending a link that you click), and the Read Aloud feature (which also contains text highlighting for students with tracking issues) The articles also contain illustrations or artwork, maps, flags, and other media At the beginning of each article is the Lexile number, and citations for the article (in MLA, Chicago, and APA)

Every article comes with access to related media, like pictures, videos, tables, charts, graphs, etc. to use for independent inquiry projects Always a struggle to find nonfiction content appropriate for younger grades – this can supplement a print collection The Go Tube collection provides hundreds of videos that can be used as an introduction to a topic Have the video playing as students enter the classroom Having differentiated colour-coded reading levels allows students to easily identify which reading level is appropriate for them This also allows students to choose whether they want to go up a reading level or down a reading level, allowing them to customize their learning Double-click dictionary also allows students to easily and independently find definitions to words they do not know
