1 Moscow, Russian Federation
Laboratory of Carbohydrate Chemistry founded in 1959 by Professor Nikolay K. Kochetkov An insight into water structure from combination of light scattering and IR studies of water–dimethyl sulfoxide mixtures Anna Orlova Good afternoon! I want to present to your attention my work N.K. Kochetkov Laboratory of Carbohydrate Chemistry N.D. Zelinsky Institute of Organic Chemistry Moscow, Russian Federation 1

2 Light scattering of water–DMSO mixtures
In the range from 2 mol % to 30 mol % DMSO the intensity of scattered light is noticeably greater (I = 8.2–12.0 kHz) than that of pure water (I0 = 2.0 kHz) or water–DMSO mixtures in the from 30 mol % to 100 mol % DMSO concentration range (I = 5.3–6.4 kHz) Calculated values of hydrodynamic radius Rh were found to be almost independent on concentration and lie within from 20 to 40 nm interval for from 2 to 30 mol % DMSO concentration range.

3 Comparison of IR and LLS data
Comparison of IR and our LLS data allows us to come to the conclusion that in from 2 mol % to 30 mol % DMSO range (on the first day of monitoring) we deal with domains where DMSO molecules interact with OH-groups on the surface of large water clusters thus probably playing the role of contrast and making them detectable by SLS/DLS. You can see more details on the poster. You are welcome!
