2 What lives in a forest? A forest is a place where many trees grow.
A forest floor is shady. The soil stays moist.

3 Forest Animals and Plants
Some tress grow tall in a forest. The high leaves catch the sunlight they need to make food. Many animals find food and shelter in a forest. Wood thrushes find safe places to build nests. Box turtles eat worms. Foxes sleep in the shade.

4 What lives in the Desert?
A desert is a dry place. It gets lots of sunlight and little rain. Only a few kinds of plants and animals can live there.

5 Desert Plants Desert plants can hold water to use when they need it.
The Yucca has think leaves and a waxy coat Others hold water in their thick stem

6 Desert Animals Most deserts are hot
Desert animals have ways to stay cool and get water Armadillos stay in the shade. They look for food at night when it is cooler Kangaroo rat get water from their food.

7 What lives in a rain forest?
A rain forest is wet all year Most rain forest are warm Rain and warm weather help trees and other plants grow Animals use the plants to meet their needs

8 Rain forest animals Animals live at different levels of the rain forest. Macaws live near the treetops They find fruit to eat Sloths hang from the middle they find shelter there and plants to eat

9 Rain forest plants Rain forest plants also live at different levels
Most grow from roots in the soil Orchids grow from roots halfway up trees They get light they need

10 What lives in the Ocean? An ocean is a large, deep body of salt water.
Oceans cover three fourths of the earth

11 Ocean plants and animals
Some ocean plants are called algae Many ocean animals use algae for food and shelter

12 Ocean plants and animals
Ocean animals can find what they need in the ocean waters Dolphins’ strong tails help them swim fast to catch fish Sea turtles use their flippers to swim and catch food.
