Answer: A human can survive up to 3 weeks without food but only 3-4 days without water. What do you think we are learning about today?

Why do we need to keep hydrated?
Forms saliva to help digestion Needed by the brain to make hormones and send signals around the body Keeps mucus membranes moist Regulates body temperature (sweating) Allows body cells to grow, reproduce and survive. Acts as a shock absorber for the brain and spinal cord Flushes body waste, mainly urine Helps digest food lubricates joints Helps deliver oxygen all over the body Water is the major component of most body parts

What happens if we do not?

What causes dehydration?
Water

What are the symptoms? Being thirsty is the first sign that you are dehydrated. Dizziness, light headed or headache. Tiredness Urinating less frequently or small amounts Dry mouth, lips and eyes.

Who is at risk? Everyone is at risk of dehydration however, infants and the elderly are more at risk. Why??

Infants They can not fetch themselves a drink.
Their bodies require a higher water content than adults. They can’t express their thirst as easily as adults.

Elderly If they are in a care home they rely on the workers to fetch them a drink. Do not feel thirsty the same as adults. Can not express their thirst. Not able to get themselves a drink. May be in a wheel chair.

Spotting the symptoms Sunken eyes.
Urinating less or dark coloured urine. Crying without tears. Headache Tired. Dry mouth.
