The effects of Gasoline on Aiptasia
Group 4: Joon Chung Jimmy Wesman Heather Hollembeak Sebastian Camacho Nauman Chandry Will Quartell
2
Background Information
Problem: Many boater’s leak fuel into the ocean which may harm coral reefs. We want to simulate this occurrence in our tank to see if the symbiosis between aiptasia and zooxanthellae is disrupted
3
Hypotheses H0: The addition of gasoline will not affect zooxanthellae density in aiptasia. HA: The addition of gasoline will reduce zooxanthellae density in aiptasia.
4
Clarification Bleaching is a descriptive term
5
Procedure November 1- We added .64 ml of 87 octane gasoline to the tank and turned the filter off. (according to CEAA) November 8- Originally supposed to add .64 ml more November 15- Decide whether to add more gasoline and if so how much? (Take into account Thanksgiving Holiday)
6
Procedure Continued Cell count using hemocytometer
Chlorophyll extraction and measurement using acetone Protein concentration using Bradford method
7
Results date 1-Nov 8-Nov Zoox density 87,943,262 62,500,000
Protein Concentration ug protein/ml ug protein/ml Chlorophyll Concentration 36.50 ng/cell ng/cell
