3 Game Management Prepare: (Uniform, equipment (whistle, penalty cards, pump, pressure gage, chain) Arrive early Look the part/First impression Establish A Rapport: (Table personnel, introduce yourself to coaches) Be professional at all times Know level of play Rule Knowledge: Know the rules: (USA; base/post bylaws) Use game common terminology Mechanics & Technique: Tools of the trade Start strong finish strong every game Use only Volley ball mechanics & signals Use strong voice when required

5 Referee Duties Pre-match with your scorekeeper - Have a thorough pre-match discussion to ensure they are familiar with procedures for the match. Meet with team coaches/captains to go over the following: Warm-up: Ten (10) minutes together or five (5) minutes separate Jewelry: None or Referee discretion. Religious or Medical must be taped. Cast or Splints: No Out-of-bounds areas: walls, dividers, bench area, table, etc. Free Space above court Substitution: must go in and out subbing for same player every time i.e. 9 for can only re-enter for 9 and 9 can only re-enter for 12. Exception injury for a player and no other sub available. Time Outs: Two (2) per set. 30 seconds each. Discussions During Game: Pertinent only

Six (6) players required: Three (3) front row and three (3) back row. Maximum of three (3) hits per side Blocked ball: A blocked contact is not counted as a team hit Ball may be played: off net or ceiling (your side) during a volley if team hasn’t used its 3 hits. Ball is out if: hits antenna; net, supports or cables to include Ref stand outside of the antennas; the floor outside the court (Lines are part of court); walls, ceiling and or partitions outside the playing area. Serve: Ball must be tossed or released prior to contact—cannot hit ball out of the hand); serve within eight (8) seconds after the referee whistles ready for play. No one can block or attack a serve from on or inside the front zone if the ball is above the net (13.2.4). Back row player can never attack a ball above the net in front zone. Back row player can never block a ball at the net.
