3 Lesson Overview Grade: 3 Medium: Paper & Watercolor Pencils
Lesson: drawing Time:75 minutes Volunteers: 3 Project Overview/Skills Students will draw a small collection of objects using simple shapes and shading. Vocabulary Line, Shape, Balance, Proportion, Dimension Resources/Prints (In Art Docent Closet) Cezanne, Paul Apples and Oranges Cezanne, Paul Flowers and Pears (for light source) Gaugin, Paul Flowers and Fruit (shadows/light source)

4 Still Life Drawing Materials Needed
Resources/Prints (In Art Docent Closet) Cezanne, Paul Apples and Oranges Cezanne, Paul Flowers and Pears (for light source) Gaugin, Paul Flowers and Fruit (shadows/light source) Materials/Home Preparation Collection of miscellaneous objects for still life groupings- recommend setting these up ahead of time, 3 or 4 objects to a grouping. Suggested items: paper clip, rock, small cup, pom pom ball, block, dice, chess piece, shell, pine cone, feather, key. Select objects that are simple in shape and have variety. 3x5 Index cards-1 per student. Set up the grouping on this card. Make sure objects overlap in some way (Save cards and return to Art Docent Closet) Scratch paper 9x12 White paper- Bristol or watercolor paper 11x14 Colored Paper for background mounting Pencils Water color pencils Small water cups Post-Lesson the Parent Letter for this lesson to your room parent (available on the PTA website under ”Art Docent Volunteer Resources”) and ask your room parent to forward it to the class. The letter gives the parents context for the lesson their student completed and this step helps ensure on-going support of the Northwood PTA Art Docent program!

5 Display Once the project is finished, student work should be mounted on colored paper and displayed either in the classroom or in the designated area in the hallway. If there are some who have not finished, please check with the teacher on how they would like to proceed. Do not assume that it ok to continue the project after the allotted time.

8 Sunflowers by Vincent van Gogh
This one of Van Gogh’s most famous paintings! He painted it in 1889 and it resides in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

10 Today’s Project Still life drawing Draw objects using simple shapes
What does still life mean? Draw objects using simple shapes An orange is a circle Still Life: A painting or drawing of an arrangement of objects (inanimate), typically including fruit and flowers and objects contrasting with these in texture, such as bowls and glassware.

11 Step 1 - Name Write your name on the back of your paper

12 Step 2 – Observe what is in front of you
What are the objects made of? circles Rectangles Dark Light Proportions- How wide are scissors compared to a cup? Where do objects overlap?

13 Step 3 – Practice Drawing
On Scratch paper, draw the simple shapes of your objects using pencil Draw them BIG- fill the page This is practice so try again if it isn’t quite right When you have a practice draft that fills the page, then move on to your final paper

14 Step 4 – Final Pencil & Shading
Move to your thick Watercolor Paper Draw your objects using simple shapes. It is ok to make correction lines Add shading What direction is the light coming from? What side of the objects is in the light? What is in shadow? Shading should be added lightly

15 Step 5 – Watercolor pencils
Use a different color for each object Color the edges of your object with watercolor pencils Try it out on the shaded side first Dip finger in water and pull the color across the object You can add more pencil even after it is damp on the page
