Structured Writing Answers
The purpose of a topic sentence is to tell the reader what your paragraph will include. CD=Concrete Detail Concrete Detail: paraphrased or quoted sentences, the “facts,” specific details for which a page number can be cited. CM=Commentary Commentary: It guides the reader to understand how the chosen CD supports/proves a thesis or topic sentence. ~Interpretation, analysis, insight, evaluation, thought, opinion, criticism, assessment. A chunk is a properly cited (MLA Format) CD accompanied by at least two CM. (1TS 1CD 2CM). ~The chunk has a lead-in that smoothly incorporates the chosen CD into the writer’s own writing. ~The chunk is written in present tense and avoids 1st and 2nd person.

One of my greatest strengths as a student is that I persevere when I come up against a difficult challenge. One situation where I showed this perseverance was in my Language Arts class last year. Mr. Jones assigned a synthesis essay where we had to use three sources to support a position on whether GMO foods should be required by law to be labeled. It was very difficult for me because the sources we had to choose from were hard for me to understand and because I had never written a synthesis essay before. So, instead of giving up, I re-read the articles, I took notes on them, and I paid really close attention to the teacher when we talked about the articles in class. After that, I came in for help before school so the teacher could help me work on my outline. As it turned out, I wrote a pretty good paper, and my final grade on it was a B. I never would have earned a grade that high without persevering through the challenges of that assignment.

2 + 1 Chunk One of my greatest strengths as a student is that I persevere when I come up against a difficult challenge. One situation where I showed this perseverance was in my Language Arts class last year. Mr. Jones assigned a synthesis essay where we had to use three sources to support a position on whether GMO foods should be required by law to be labeled. Another challenging assignment I had to complete last year was in my science class where we had to take a test on photosynthesis, a complicated process plants use to create energy from light. Both assignments were difficult for me because it is hard for me to read challenging material. The articles we had to read on GMO foods used many long words with technical definitions, and my science book uses advanced vocabulary and complicated sentences. But instead of giving up, I used the reading strategies my ninth grade language arts teacher taught me. As I read I take notes on key ideas, I look up difficult words in the dictionary, I ask questions about the material to keep my mind engaged in the ideas, and I make sure to re-read the material several times over the course of two or three days. Neither assignment was easy for me, but with a lot of hard work and using the skills I have learned in school, I was able to do well on the GMO and the photosynthesis test.

8. CS=concluding sentence/statement .
9. The purpose of a CS is to restate the thesis in different wording by relating what was written (your CDs and CMs) back to the topic sentence. Does not introduce new information. 10. To “weave” CD and CM --similar to authentic transitions in that they tie the CD and CM together effectively, almost like a “smooth” transition from the CDs to the CMs. The weaving occurs when you bring in some of your CD and its purpose into the beginning of your first CM. Think of it as CM1 = this shows that… and then point out what the quote says and how it says it for a purpose. 11. “Authentic” transitions can connect paragraphs effortlessly and turn disconnected writing into a unified whole. Your transitions should sound smooth and “conversational” or literally authentic e.g. NOT like this “First, the author discusses Puritans…. In addition, the author also discusses Native Americans” .

A “lead-in” --Embedding or your lead into your quote -Should always flow smoothly from your words to the author’s words -Doesn’t need to change first person to third person in the quote, but you do need to set up who is speaking if “I” is used (e.g. In Shelley’s poem, the speaker reveals that Ozymandias was a king who often thought to himself, “I am the king of kings” (9). -Should help set up the quote so that the audience knows why the quote is relevant. -Tenses should be consistent between the lead-in and the quote.

13. Embedding a quote: Quotations must be smoothly woven and embedded into your own writing. The quote is woven into the sentence. Like a big bear, “Lennie dabbles his paw in the water” when stopping for a drink (12). 14. The purpose of a thesis statement is to tell the reader what the essay is about and give the essay direction. The goals are to organize and develop your argument and make a guide for the reader. A thesis statement should answer a question about the topic you are exploring. ~A topic sentence, written at the beginning of the paragraph, simply explains what a paragraph is about…not the entire paper. It helps prove the thesis.
