Matter (part 3): Separating Mixtures
WCHS Chemistry FYI*** There will be a test question about separating mixtures!
2
Separating Mixtures Mixtures are not chemically bonded & can be separated by physical means ALWAYS look at the properties of the involved components and utilize them to separate mixtures! Ex: boiling point, density, solubility, etc… The more similar the properties are, the more difficult it is to separate them.

Total Cereal Demo ***just for fun!
4
Methods for Separating Mixtures
There are many ways -- these are just a few!
5
Distillation Separates mixtures by differences in boiling point.
Heat mixture until the substance with the lowest boiling point evaporates away.
6
2. Filtration Separates mixtures based on solubility
When an INSOLUBLE substance (a solid) is in a solution → use a filter to collect the particles! Works well for large quantities.
7
3. Centrifuge Separates mixtures by the property of density (& solubility too!) When an INSOLUBLE substance (a solid) is in a solution... Spins until the more dense particles settle out Only works well for small quantities, but FAST!

4. Chromatography Separates mixtures of colored chemicals
Substances that dissolve more easily travel the farthest up the chromatography paper.
