1 Supporting Y11 Students for Summer Examinations

2 Study Support Offer What is it? Less formal than a normal lesson but focussed on specific target grades (L4+, L5+, L7+) 3-4pm with subject teachers in subject areas Started small (Maths & English) and growing rapidly. Now all subjects have sessions running Students are selected based on data but can ask to come along as well As data changes so will the list of invited students Why is it happening? Small steps of improvement now will translate into larger gains by the end of Y11 Avoids ‘cramming’ at the last minute

3 English Literature: What we are doing? What you can do at home?
Literature set texts: Shakespeare’s Macbeth, An Inspector Calls A Christmas Carol Power and Conflict Poetry anthology What we are doing? What you can do at home? Offering theatre opportunities (AIC in York, Macbeth and ACC are coming up) Watch the films of Macbeth and A Christmas Carol, The BBC version of An Inspector Calls Revising the plot and key characters Read the books together at home, discuss key events and use Youtube tutorials for scene analysis Practice exam essay questions Tutors/ Timed exam practice / Read their work, discuss the key characters, key scenes and plot at home

4 English Language: What we are doing? What you can do at home?
The skills Reading non-fiction and fiction extracts ranging from 19th to 21st century Writing non-fiction(letters, articles, speeches) and creative writing (descriptions and narratives) What we are doing? What you can do at home? Revising the skills: analysis of language and structure, evaluate Test their reading and comprehension of non-fiction (BBC news articles are ideal) once a week Practice essay questions Tutors… Time them on essay questions, show an interest in their writing and read their work

5 Maths Support Offer Revise now. It’s never too early. Don’t just copy the notes but actively do questions! Practice – Practice - Practice! Hegarty maths for homework and independent learning – this site has many instructional videos to enable your child to become independent learners. There are many revision sites that are useful we recommend the use of here you will find many revision tools. Buy a decent calculator, bring it to school and use it – we recommend casio fx series. School does not provide them for exams. 6 Other Subjects Successful introduction in English & Maths Now widened the offer to other subjects Invites based on data and also students asking to attend All subjects have countdown plans (soon on website) – & up around the school Managing & monitoring student attendance Mr Tunnicliffe keeping an overview of which students are attending when to avoid any one student attending too many. Discussed on an individual level and revisited as needed. Regular contact with tutors to follow up when students don’t attend. If a student is finding they are being asked to attend 2 sessions on the same night they must let me know. (I can prioritise for them & speak to staff).

Academy website: Links will be added over next few weeks / Ask teachers in lessons Ask to attend subject Study Support sessions Student workroom Available after school every night (T36 / T41) with Mrs Whitehead 3-5pm

8 Key Dates Autumn term w/c 1st October – Collecting data on Attitude to Learning (to be sent home) w/c 8th October – Mock Exams in core subjects w/c 12th November – Mock Exams in all subjects w/c 10th December – Data week (to be sent home before Christmas) Spring Term 24th January – Y11 Parents Evening w/c 28th January - Mock Exams in core subjects w/c 4th March - Mock Exams in all subjects w/c 1st April – Data week (to be sent home) Summer Term 13th May – GCSE Written Exams begin
