6 The Contemporary Manager
Unit 5001 Personal Development as a Manager and Leader The Contemporary Manager Make a list of the key roles and responsibilities undertaken by managers today How many of these do you undertake? At which do you excel and which are your weakest? Which would you like to improve the most? Trainer Notes: Group Exercise: The Contemporary Manager (Duration: maximum 40 minutes including group feedback) AIM: To identify and reflect on the roles and responsibilities of the modern manager Use this exercise to open a discussion about the role of today’s manager and to increase student involvement and participation – it is also an opportunity to observe all of the students to assess who might need additional support Organise students into groups of 3 – 6 Explain they have minutes to discuss the questions Ask the groups to capture discussions (possibly on flip chart) so one person can feedback to the whole group After group feedback, discuss general points and cover any areas not discussed and introduce the next slide Unit 5001: Personal Development as a Manager & Leader © Exponential Training & Assessment Limited

Unit 5001 Personal Development as a Manager and Leader The Contemporary Manager Trainer Notes: Build on the feedback from the previous exercise and briefly take students through this slide Explain not all managers undertake all of the elements: some might be specialist managers; some might manage functions, some might not directly manage people Increasingly managers are undertaking coaching and are responsible for staff welfare Invite groups to comment on which elements they undertake currently and which areas they feel they need to learn more about Unit 5001: Personal Development as a Manager & Leader © Exponential Training & Assessment Limited

Comfort Zones Trainer Notes: Explain that learning and development automatically takes people out side of their comfort zone: any time we are required to do something we have never done before, we are outside our comfort zone – the more challenging and demanding the task the more we are outside of our comfort zone Often fear can prevent us from doing things so we need to learn to accept that it is okay to feel uncomfortable and recognise that with learning, practice and experience we will feel more comfortable in time It is better to step just outside of our comfort zone rather than stepping massively outside of it High performing managers have learned how to learn and how to step outside of their comfort zone Comfort zones grow as we learn, develop and literally feel comfortable with the scenario so the message is: FEEL THE FEAR AND DO IT ANYWAY (with the right learning and support) Unit 5001: Personal Development as a Manager & Leader © Exponential Training & Assessment Limited
